The Hyundai Elantra Touring is a small hatchback positioned slightly above higher than the standard Elantra compact. Despite its tidy dimensions, the Elantra Touring sports a sizable cargo area along with space to seat four adults in comfort.
Based on the European version of the previous-generation Elantra, the Elantra touring features an SUV-like 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space that swells to an impressive 65.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The little hatchback compliments its practical cabin with fairly lively handling dynamics (a function of its Old World roots).
Providing motive force for the car is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 138 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque. That power is sent through either a five-speed manual transmission of a four-speed automatic.
Fuel economy is rated at 23 miles per gallon city regardless of transmission choice, but opting for the automatic will drop highway mileage from 31 to 30 mpg.
Trim Level Breakdown
The Elantra Touring comes in two trim levels: base GLS, or range-topping SE.
GLS includes standard features such as a air conditioning, rear heater ducts, cabin air filter, tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry with alarm, 172-watt MP3-ready stereo, Ipod and USB ports, XM Satellite Radio and three free months of XM satellite radio.
Stepping up to the SE will add to that list: telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, leather seating surfaces and illuminated front vanity mirrors.
Occupant Safety
Safety features include active head restraints, four-wheel disc brakes, electronic stability control (ESC), a traction control system (TCS), an energy absorbing steering column, six airbags and ABS.

Those looking for a fuel-efficient hatchback like the Elantra Touring with the cargo flexibility of a hatchback design should also consider more modern and fuel-efficient choices such as the Ford Focus, the Mazda Mazda3 and the Subaru Impreza.
