It's no secret that Hyundai 's latest Sonata is one of, if not the greatest success story in the company's history since coming to the U.S. market.

Sales have been strong, and generally getting stronger with every month - despite stiff competition from long-time leaders such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, as well as strong newcomers in the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu .

Of course, you can also add into the mix the Buick Regal with its 2.0-liter turbo, good for 220 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, but just 18 city, and 30 highway miles per gallon. Or the Volkswagen Passat, set to be discontinued, and featuring a 2.0-liter turbo good for an anemic 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, with 22 city and 31 highway mpg to go along with it.

But if you look at all of the competitors to the Sonata, there is one thing you won't currently find: a turbocharged model with fuel economy better than most naturally aspirated four-cylinders in the class.

Hyundai hopes to change that with the Sonata 2.0-liter Turbo, available in the base SE 2.0T Turbo form, starting at $24,145 plus $720 destination, or the upscale Limited 2.0T for $27,045 plus destination. Fuel economy is as impressive as the power, with an EPA rating of 22 city and 33 highway.

Using Hyundai’s latest 'Blue Drive' turbocharging and direct-injection technology, the Sonata 2.0T produces a best-in-class 274 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, to boot. Best of all, the Sonata achieves those figures on regular fuel.

"The Sonata 2.0T is a great example of what our Blue Drive product strategy is doing for consumers," said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO. "Think about it – more horsepower than any of our V6 competitors, with better gas mileage than any competitive four-cylinder model. We're not fans of compromising at Hyundai, and the Sonata really demonstrates this aspect of our business approach."

The 2.0T engine option is available on SE and Limited models. Limited models equipped with the 2.0T engine option will come standard with a panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

All 2.0T models will shift via six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual shifting control.
