The Infiniti Performance Line G Coupe is a sportier, more driver-focused version of the already athletic G37 Coupe. It is the first vehicle from Infiniti's new IPL performance division.

Infiniti says that the IPL vehicles are targeted at buyers who seek greater performance from their luxury vehicles, but who also want to express a greater degree of "individual style." IPL vehicles feature heightened levels of luxury and performance thanks to modifications to the exterior, interior, engine tuning and suspension.

The first vehicle to receive the IPL treatment is the G Coupe, which features a sportier new front fascia with integrated fog lights and black finishers, followed by more pronounced side skirts, a new rear bumper/fascia, a rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tips. Exterior changes are rounded out with the exclusive 19-inch IPL split seven-spoke graphite-finish wheels and low-profile W-rated Bridgestone Potenza RE50A performance tires.

IPL interior treatment
As a special edition, the IPL G Coupe’s interior comes in only two colors: Graphite (gray) and Monaco Red (which is only available with the Malbec Black exterior and seven-speed automatic transmission). The interior features red-stitched leather-appointed front sport seats with manual thigh extension and driver’s power torso and thigh support adjustment, red-stitched and leather-wrapped steering wheel, Silk Obi aluminum trim and aluminum pedals and footrest.

Infiniti has also increased standard features to include Infiniti Studio on Wheels audio system by Bose, Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System, 9.3GB Music Box hard drive, Infiniti Voice Recognition for audio navigation, memory system for driver’s seat, RearView Monitor, rear sonar and moonroof.

What defines the IPL experience
Infiniti says that the IPL G Coupe’s enhanced performance and driving experience comes from three areas of focus – engine tuning, dynamic tuning and sound quality/acceleration feel tuning. The luxury automaker explains that engine performance modifications did not only provide for increased peak horsepower and torque levels, but also for acceleration feel and exhaust sound without compromising fuel economy or noise standards.

The IPL-tuned high-flow exhaust is a true dual exhaust design that features a unique interior design and makes use of materials that allow for maximized reduction in pressure while still creating a uniquely performance-minded exhaust note. Compared to the standard G Coupe’s Y-pipe exhaust, the IPL G Coupe enjoys 30 percent less exhaust pressure.

The IPL G Coupe’s VQ37HR 3.7-liter V6 engine management system has been re-calibrated through air-fuel mixture and ignition timing optimization, raising the maximum horsepower output point to 7,400 rpm from 7,000 rpm. For an improved acceleration feel, the torque curve from below the peak torque was re-tuned for a more linear feel. As a result of both the exhaust system and engine management changes, the IPL G Coupe generates 348 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque – an increase of 18 horsepower and 6 lb-ft of torque.

Drivers can choose from either a short-throw six-speed manual or a seven-speed paddle-shifter-equipped automatic transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 19/27 mpg for the automatic and 17/25 mpg for the stick.

Key Competitors
At this price point, those considering the IPL G Coupe should also check out the Porsche Cayman, which features superb steering and a neutral mid-engine layout, the Audi TT RS, which has a strong turbo five-cylinder and a slick gearbox to its credit, and the BMW 335i Coupe, which boasts a usable backseat and a velvety-smooth turbocharged inline-six.
