The all-new Forte 5-door, as Kia calls it, is the hatchback nameplate-mate to the Forte sedan that was first introduced in 2009. The Forte 5-door is intended to expand the Forte lineup with a more versatile option - a hatchback.

While the Forte sedan is available in LX, EX and SX trim levels, Kia simplified things for the 5-door and narrowed your choices down to the EX and SX versions right out of the box.

Because Kia nixed the entry-level trim level from the 5-door's list of choices, pricing for the hatch starts just shy of $2,000 higher than the base Forte sedan, and starting at $16,895.

Standard features including air conditioning, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth wireless technology and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

Given that the 5-door starts at the Ex trim level, it also features standard power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, map lamps, cruise control, added cupholders and floor mats.

The 5-door EX model also offers an optional Premium Package that includes a power sunroof with tilt and 16-inch alloy wheels outfitted with 205/55R16 tires. The power sunroof with tilt also is an available option stand-alone for the SX trim level.

The sport-minded SX model brings even more standard features, including a unique black interior with sport cloth fabric adorned with red stitching, a telescopic steering column, Supervision gauge cluster, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and metal-finish trim and pedals.

Major upgrade packages
For those looking to deck out their Forte 5-door, look no further than the Technology Package, which includes navigation, fully automatic temperature control, push button start, fog lamps (EX package only), automatic headlamps and chrome exterior door handles.

The available SX Leather Package offers additional luxurious enhancements, including leather seat trim, heated front seats and an electro-chromic rear view mirror.

What's under the hood?
It depends - if you opt for the base Forte 5-door EX model you will find a 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder under the hood, good for 156 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque. The base engine comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that features Sportmatic mode for clutchless shifting via paddle shifters.

For those who step up to the SX trim level, expect a 2.4-liter four-cylinder to be connected to your right foot, good for 173 horsepower.

Fuel economy for the 2.0-liter engine is rated at 25 city, 34 highway with either the automatic or manual transmission. Opting for the more powerful 2.4-liter engine in the SX will drop fuel economy to 23 city, 31 highway miles per gallon.

Safety
Forte offers an impressive array of standard safety equipment, including: front active headrests, dual advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted and side curtain airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, side impact door beams, front and rear crumple zones, four-wheel disc brakes with an Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and a Brake Assist System (BAS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a Traction Control System (TCS) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
