The latest generation of Optima midsize sedan is proving to be historic for Kia, with the Optima Hybrid being the first hybrid offered by the brand in the U.S., and the Optima Turbo being the first turbocharged vehicle ever offered by Kia in the U.S. market.
The Kia Optima Turbo comes in two trim levels, EX and SX (which gets a new Limited package for the latest model year), both of which boast 274 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque thanks to the innovative new GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine. Despite all that power, the Kia Optima Turbo will return 22 city and 34 highway miles per gallon, and comes matched to a six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic clutch-free shifting.
Like the Optima Hybrid, the Optima Turbo gains a distinct exterior design from the standard Optima, helping to differentiate it from its two stablemates. While the Turbo EX does offer a unique front fascia compared to the non-turbo Optima EX, opting for the even more high-end Turbo SX adds HID headlights with auto-leveling technology, LED rear combination lights, a unique front grille design, rear lip spoiler, sculpted side sills, aero wiper blades, black front brake calipers and 18-inch black machined finish alloy wheels furnished with P225/45R18 tires.
Kia was sure to spend some time on the interior, as well, adding paddle shifters to the SX model, and a cockpit-style layout regardless of trim level. The list of standard features and technology is lengthy to say the least, ranging from MP3/Bluetooth compatibility to Sirius Satellite radio, to steering-wheel mounted radio and voice controls.
Other interior features standard on the Turbo include a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power windows and locks, a cooled glovebox, eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, leather seat trim, leatherette center fascia and meter housing, soft seat trim with French seams, auto-dimming rear view mirror with Homelink and compass, auto light control, driver and front passenger automatic window up/down and, front door mood lamps, rear reading lamps, floor mats and chrome door handles.
For those seeking even more sporty appeal, the Optima SX adds unique black leather woven seat trim, black interior trim with carbon insert film, Supervision meter cluster with LCD display, center fascia and meter housing, soft trim with French seams, steering wheel paddle shifters, metal pedals and lighted metal door scuff plates.
As if all of those features weren't already more than enough, Kia also offers several packages for each trim level, ranging from the Technology Package, to the Convenience Package, to a Premium Package.
Limited Package
Those looking for the most luxurious, feature-packed Optima Turbo available should spec the Limited package.
Available only on the SX trim level, the Limited package distinguishes itself outside with unique front and rear fascias, LED running lights over the fog lamps, a chrome-tipped rear spoiler and lower door sills. Sporty five-spoke chrome wheels are also included, and only three colors are available: Ebony Black, Snow White Pearl, and Titanium Metallic.
Inside, a host of changes work to give the cabin a more upscale feel: genuine wood trim adorns the steering wheel, door trim and shift knob, Nappa leather embellishes the seats, door panels, and center console, and black tricot fabric enhances the headliner and sun visor along with the A, B and C pillars.
The list of standard features includes (deep breath): steering wheel paddle shifters, metal pedals, a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, navigation system with back-up camera and an Infinity audio system and speakers.
Key Competitors
The Optima Turbo competes against V6- and turbo four-equipped variants of the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima and Honda Accord, as well as with its own mechanically identical sibling, the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T.
