The Land Rover LR4 is a full-size SUV with a potent V8, impressive off-road and towing capabilities and enough room to seat seven passengers in comfort. It is essentially a refreshed version of the old LR3 with a revised exterior, a more powerful motor and a more luxurious cabin.
The fresh exterior design for 2010 onward includes smoother new front end and revised lights, including LEDs. The updated interior delivers a more premium and functional five and optional seven-seat space. Other notable features include an available Surround Camera system, Gradient Release Control, Tow Assist, available Automatic High Beam Assist and Push Button start.
Aerodynamic changes to the front end, with the revised front lower chin spoiler and new front wheel deflectors, help to reduce drag. 19-inch wheels and tires optimized for rolling resistance and improved tire wear also increase efficiency. The interior is completely redesigned, with a revamped dash and center console, new seats, and improved controls.
The LR4 utilizes a 5.0-liter V8 and delivers 25 percent more power and 19 percent more torque than the somewhat 4.4-liter engine it replaced - totaling 375 horsepower and 375 pound-feet.
The engine was optimized for low-end torque, making it possible to activate the lock-up clutch of the automatic transmission at lower speed. This reduces 'slip' in the hydraulic torque converter benefiting both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The higher torque at lower rpm also enables longer gearing for more economical cruising. Despite these modifications, the LR4 is still a big, heavy 4X4 SUV, and it returns 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.
A six-speed ZF automatic transmission provides a wide spread of gear ratios. Three shift modes are available. In the automatic mode, up- and down-shifts are electronically regulated for smooth gear changes. In the Sport mode, shifting is keyed to maximum acceleration performance. In the CommandShift mode, the driver has manual control over the gears.
Land Rover's engineers also sought to improve the LR4's on-road ride and handling, in addition to the acclaimed all-terrain capabilities of its predecessor. The changes include new suspension components, revised steering, larger brakes, improved traction control, and enhancements to the Terrain Response system, which helps optimize the vehicle for a variety of driving situations.
A more powerful brake system features four-piston calipers and 14.2-inch rotors in the front, with single-piston calipers and 13.8-inch rotors in the rear.
Four-corner independent height-adjustable air suspension and Land Rover's exclusive Terrain Response system are both standard across the range. Terrain Response is an adjustable suspension system with five settings: general, grass/gravel/snow, mud/ruts, sand, and rock crawl.
Trim Level Breakdown
The LR4 is offered in base, HSE and HSE LUX trim levels.
The base model LR4 comes standard with leather upholstery, power seats, a power sunroof and an "Alpine" glass rear roof, dual-zone automatic climate control, an AM/FM/CD sound system with a USB port and a seven-inch touch-screen, 19-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and more.
The HSE brings a hard drive-based navigation system, a rear parking camera, LED front accent lighting and voice recognition capability. The HSE LUX adds a premium leather upholstery, heated front and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, interior mood lighting and rear climate control.
Options include the Heavy-Duty Package, which includes an active locking rear differential with a full-size spare tire, and the Vision Assist Package, which includes a surround camera system and a tow hitch assist system.
Occupant Safety
All LR4 models come standard with dual front, side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems and electronic brake assist.
Key Competitors
While rivals like the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Acura MDX provide more refined on-road driving dynamics, only the Lexus GX 460 can come close to the LR4's off-road prowess.
