Land Rover ’s Ranger Rover Evoque is the latest vehicle to join the storied automaker, but certainly stands out from the rest of the lineup due to its decidedly more road-minded design than the rest of the models. The Evoque Coupe is the most style-oriented model in the lineup, while the Evoque Five-Door adds an extra dose of practicality.

The Evoque is set to push some of Land Rover ’s models in a new, more urban direction, although the company says it will continue producing off road-oriented models. The automaker defends the street-ready Evoque model as a response to stricter emissions standards.

Motivation
A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine and a 2.2-liter turbodiesel in European examples of the Evoque. The Evoque is offered in either front or all-wheel-drive and its off road features are limited - although a version of Terrain Response control is available on all-wheel-drive Evoques.

Likely to usher the Evoque’s introduction to the North American market, the direct-injected gas engine produces 236 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Land Rover turned to former owner Ford for this EcoBoost powerplant.

The turbodiesels, which aren’t likely to make it to North America, include 148 and 187 horsepower variants. Land Rover says that a front-wheel-drive Evoque with the 148-horsepower diesel is capable of averaging an impressive 58 mpg (Imperial) combined and emits less than 130 g/km of CO2. Both turbodiesels will be mated to automatic and manual transmissions; stick-equipped Evoques will feature a start-stop function to further cut consumption.

Stylistically speaking
According to Land Rover, the Evoque is the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced, measuring just 171 inches from head to toe. It was designed at the firm’s Gaydon facility and is produced in Halewood. The Evoque is largely based on the Land Rover LR2 , itself riding on a Volvo -developed platform.

Stylistically a dead-ringer for the automaker’s LRX concept car that debuted several years ago, the Evoque boasts a much more aggressive shape than any Land Rover vehicle before it.

Inside, the squared off, symmetrical dashboard theme isn’t unlike that found on the LR4 and Range Rover. In Europe, three trim packages – Pure, Prestige an Dynamic – are available. Land Rover hasn't announced full North American-specifications.

Pure models feature brushed aluminum trim and neutral colors, while the Prestige badge brings with it two-tone leather wrapping nearly every surface and mixed wood and aluminum trim. Dynamic adds a sport-oriented interior and the availability of a contrasting-color roof and rear spoiler.

An available 17-speaker, 825-Watt Meridian audio system highlights the list of available tech goodies. Surround Camera System, hard drive-based navigation, rear seat entertainment, blind spot monitoring and keyless access make their way down from other Land Rovers.

Key Competitors
The Evoque Coupe doesn't really have any direct rivals; the Jeep Wrangler is the only other two-door SUV on the market, yet it is far more off-road oriented, not to mention less luxurious, than the Range Rover. In terms of head-turning style, crossovers like the BMW X6 and Acura ZDX could be considered competitors to the Evoque Coupe.
