The Range Rover Evoque is the latest vehicle to join Land Rover's lineup, and it certainly stands out from the rest of the storied off-road nameplate's range due to its decidedly more road-minded design. The Evoque family includes the three-door Evoque Coupe as well as the more practical Evoque Five-Door.

According to Land Rover, the Evoque is the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced, measuring just 172 inches from head to toe. It was designed at the firm’s Gaydon facility and is produced in Halewood. The Evoque is largely based on the Land Rover LR2, itself riding on a Volvo-developed platform.

Stylistically a dead-ringer for the automaker’s LRX concept car that debuted several years ago, the Evoque boasts a much more aggressive shape than any Land Rover vehicle before it.

Inside, the squared off, symmetrical dashboard theme isn’t unlike that found on the LR4 and Range Rover. Interior technology includes dual-view display for eight-inch touch-screen and Surround Camera System. A full-sized glass panoramic roof enhances the sensation of space and comfort by flooding the interior with natural light, and offers greater headroom for all occupants.

The rear seats, with seat belts and head restraints for three passengers, have 60/40 folding seat squabs and are equipped with ISOFIX child seat mounts.

Whereas the Evoque coupe is aimed at the style conscious, Land Rover says the five-door model is geared more toward young families. The five-door sports a slightly higher roofline than its three-door counterpart, which allows for added passenger and cargo room. Of course, there are also added doors in the rear for ease of entry.

The U.S.-market Evoque five-door uses a 240 horsepower, 250 lb-ft of torque version of Ford’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that motivates the Evoque from a dead stop to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. The engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the combo is good for an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Though the Evoque is hardly a dedicated off-road machine, its still more capable than most crossovers in the rough stuff thanks to its standard all-wheel-drive and Terrain Response system.

The Range Rover Evoque also allows customers to specify many aspects of the cabin, with soft, premium leather and tailored, twin-needle stitching providing a luxurious finish to almost every surface of the instrument panel, doors and seats.

Occupant Safety
All Evoque models come standard with dual front, side, full-length side-curtain and knee airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems.

Key Competitors
The Evoque is close in size to the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK 350, though it is priced closer to larger luxury crossovers like the Acura MDX.
