Never before had Lexus offered an entry-level convertible until it introduced the IS C two years ago. Based heavily on the second-generation IS sedan, the IS 350C (along with the less powerful IS 250C) boasts a quick-folding hardtop and smooth V6 power.
A traditional four-seat convertible, the IS 350C slots above its IS 250C sibling, but well below the automaker's other droptop, the SC 430, despite having mower power.
Powered by Lexus' 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 that also sees duty in a handful of the automaker's other models, the IS 350C is available only with a six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The V6 features direct injection and dual variable valve timing. The horsepower peaks at 6,400 rpm, while its 277 lb-ft. of torque peaks at a slightly lower 4,800 rpm, all of which helps it accelerate to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds -- a reasonable figure for a 3,880 lb. convertible.
The IS 350C is a certified Ultra Low Emission Vehicle.
Sharing most of its architecture with the IS sedan, the convertible is set apart by a three-piece aluminum hardtop can descend in just 21 seconds. It relies on a roof-brake mechanism to slow the panels as they approach the windshield frame or the trunk of the car.
A hard tonneau cover keeps the elements away from the folded top, while improving the car's profile. The roof itself is thoroughly insulated to keep ambient sound levels mostly equivalent to the sedan.
Underneath, the IS shares the sedan's fully independent suspension and features gas-saving electronic power steering. Fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
With the top up, the IS 350C cuts a low profile to the wind -- just 0.29 Cd.
Rear wheel drive is standard across the line; the sedan's optional all-wheel-drive is not available.
Only a handful of options aside from the obligatory paint and upholstery shades are available to help personalize IS 350Cs. Heated and ventilated seats make an appearance on the options list, as does a power-sliding mechanism that helps the front seats return to their last positions when they are moved forward to allow access to the rear seat.
A navigation system comes packaged with a 12-speaker, 270-watt Mark Levinson-branded audio system. The navigation features XM Radio's NavTraffic, while the audio system is capable of playing DVD audio discs.
The Luxury Package pairs the heated and ventilated seats with rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview exterior mirrors, bi-xenon headlamps and unique dark-finish wood trim.
Finally, the Luxury Package can be augmented with blue leather-trimmed seats with Alabaster inserts for an even more unique look.
The IS 350C benefits from the same F-Sport portfolio of dealer-installed performance items seen on the IS sedan.
