As the hotter version of the GranTurismo Convertible, the Sport model brings extra power and a slightly more aggressive look to Maserati’s Pininfarina-designed drop-top. Though not an all-out sports car, the GranTurismo Convertible Sport boasts a spacious interior with handcrafted details, a sonorous engine and loads of Italian character.
Under the long hood lies a Ferrari-based 4.7-liter V8 that produces 444 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque, compared with 433 ponies and 361 lb-ft of twist in the standard convertible. Friction-reducing measures like a revised coating for the valve tappets and cam lobes along with an upgraded oil sump account for horsepower increase. Transmitting power from the engine to the rear wheels is a six-speed automatic that blips the throttle on downshifts and offers an obedient manual mode in which it won’t shift unless so ordered.
The zero-to-60 mph sprint is achieved in around 5 seconds, while top speed is an autobahn-friendly 177 mph. Helping to provide a balanced dynamic package are handling upgrades that include stiffer springs and anti-roll bars along with a retuned “Skyhook” active suspension system that gives the big convertible a more nimble feel. The brakes were developed by Brembo and feature four ventilated and cross-drilled discs.
Outside, the elegant, flowing lines and classic proportions of the standard convertible carry over, with subtle details like a black front grille, black-out headlights as well as unique side skirts and front corner splitters distinguishing the Sport.
Towards the rear of the car, the triangular light units are formed by 96 LEDs and contain a wide diffuser that further underlines the car's athletic poise. This sporty feel is also seen in the unique 20-inch alloy wheels that reflect the design of Maserati’s Trident badge.
The GranTurismo Convertible Sport’s cabin is upholstered in leather that was handcrafted by Poltrona Frau and a selection of prestigious wood trim used for the dashboard, door panel and rear areas. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail can also be seen in the chrome rings that enhance the dashboard switches and steering wheel as well as the Alcantara sections meeting the fingertips on the back of the steering wheel shift paddles. Unlike most convertibles, the rear seats are actually habitable by normally sized adults for short trips.
Occupant Safety
Besides a contingent of air bags, including front, side and side curtain units, the GranTurismo Convertible Sport is outfitted with deployable roll bars mounted behind the rear seats that automatically rise in just 190 milliseconds in the event of a rollover incident. Traction and stability control systems are also fitted as standard, as is ABS.
