Created for those who find the GranTurismo S to be a bit too laid-back, the GranTurismo MC features a more potent engine along with slightly more aggressive styling. Despite the changes, the big coupe is still more of a grand tourer than an sports car, and that’s no bad thing – with a spacious, impeccably trimmed cabin and style in spades, the GranTurismo makes long-distance trips an effortless affair.
The Europeans get a racier version of the MC than the one offered in America – across the pond, the MC sheds 220 pounds by ditching the rear seats, utilizing non-adjustable perches up front and donning carbon ceramic brakes.
Stateside, however, the GranTurismo MC’s claim to fame is a melodious 4.7 liter V8 that produces 444 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque, compared with 433 ponies and 361 lb-ft of twist in the GranTurismo S. Friction-reducing measures like a revised coating for the valve tappets and cam lobes along with an upgraded oil sump account for horsepower increase. Transmitting power from the engine to the rear wheels is a six-speed automatic that blips the throttle on downshifts and offers an obedient manual mode in which it won’t shift unless so ordered.
Maserati claims that the MC is capable of zero-to-60 in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 185 mph. Fuel economy figures are less impressive (though nobody drives a Maserati to go green), with the car rated at 12 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.
Visual changes include ducted front fenders and vented hood, revised, downforce-enhancing front and rear bumpers, piano black trim in place of the standard chrome touches and dark-appearance headlights. Unique 20-inch wheels help improve handling by eliminating 10 pounds of unsprung weight, while an optional “Skyhook” adaptable-damper system also makes the car more nimble.
The GranTurismo MC’s cabin is upholstered in leather that was handcrafted by Poltrona Frau and a selection of prestigious wood trim used for the dashboard, door panel and rear areas. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail can also be seen in the chrome rings that enhance the dashboard switches and steering wheel as well as the Alcantara sections meeting the fingertips on the back of the steering wheel shift paddles.
Occupant Safety
Besides a contingent of air bags, including front, side and side curtain units, the GranTurismo MC is outfitted with traction and stability control systems in addition to ABS.
