Those desirous of supercar performance but in need of everyday practicality should look no further than the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon. This car’s ability to blend outrageous levels of power with traditional Mercedes comfort and a spacious interior is exceeded by few vehicles on the market.
The heart of the E63 AMG Wagon is the 5.5-liter “Biturbo” V8. This twin-turbocharged monster utilizes direct fuel injection and 14.5 psi of boost to create 518 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Should potential customers feel that those numbers are inadequate, an optional AMG Performance Package cranks up the boost to 18.8 psi for a monumental 550 ponies and 590 lb-ft. The zero-to-60 sprint should come in just over four seconds for the standard car and slightly under four ticks for Performance Package-equipped models. Not bad for a station wagon.
All E63 AMGs utilize a seven-speed “MCT” automatic transmission that ditches a conventional torque converter for a wet clutch pack that makes shifts quick and smooth, even at low speeds (something that cannot be said of competitors’ dual clutch automatics).
Fuel economy is rated at 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.
Helping to keep things under control when the road gets curvy is the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension that features a specially designed front axle with a 2.2-inch increase in track width relative to the normal E-Class, in addition to independent wheel carriers for increased negative camber at the front to improve grip during performance driving.
Further features include steel suspension struts on the front axle and air suspension struts on the rear axle with an automatic level control system and an electronically controlled damping system, which automatically adjusts the damping characteristics depending on driving conditions and reduces body roll. The driver can switch between the three suspension modes of "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport plus" at the touch of a button.
On of the few weak spots on the car, at least for enthusiasts, is the steering. It’s a power-assisted, electrohydraulic setup that offers a dearth of information concerning the activities of the front wheels, though it is generally accurate and isolated enough for miles of easy freeway cruising.
Inside, the car sports a three-spoke steering wheel with a flattened rim at both the top and bottom to allow improved driver control. Genuine aluminum paddle shifters sit behind the helm, while “Silver Shadow” metallic trim and numerous AMG badges round out the interior changes between the E63 AMG and lesser E-Class models.
The E63 AMG Wagon's five-seat configuration can easily expand to seven seats by unfolding a standard third-row rear-facing seat from the luggage compartment floor. A 60-40 fold-down rear seat allows for a cavernous and flexible cargo area. Mercedes states that the E63 AMG Wagon can carry a grandfather clock and still accommodate three occupants, or it can manage a load of lumber along with four people aboard. Of course, there will probably be a negative percentage of E63 AMG Wagon owners employing their cars as leather-lined lumber transporters, but at least the possibility is there.
Standard features range from a COMAND system (an iDrive-like multifunction control) with a seven-inch color display, an in-dash six-disc CD/DVD changer, a Bluetooth interface system, a panoramic sunroof and a rearview camera.
A 40 percent lighter AMG ceramic high-performance two-piece braking system is available as a special order option. Included in the package are 19-inch AMG 10-spoke wheels with 255/35 R19 tires on the front and 285/30 R19 at the rear.
The previously mentioned Performance Package, in addition to raised boost pressure, also includes a carbon fiber engine cover, AMG Performance steering wheel with black Alcantara side grips, red-painted brake calipers and a carbon fiber trunk lid spoiler.
Numerous driver assistance systems in the 2012 E63 AMG Wagon help to avoid accidents or mitigate their severity, such as Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Active Blind Spot Assist warns the driver if the short-range radar sensors detect a risk of collision if the vehicle changes lanes. Should the driver ignore these warnings and come dangerously close to the vehicle in the next lane, Active Blind Spot Assist will intervene by applying braking force to the rear wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle, controlled through the 3-stage ESP system, thus creating a yaw movement which corrects the car's path.
Active Lane Keeping Assist is also linked to the three-stage ESP and activates when the driver inadvertently drifts over a solid line to the right or left of a lane. In this case, Active Lane Keeping Assist brakes the opposite rear wheel and prevents the vehicle from crossing the line. A display on the instrument cluster warns the driver at the same time.
If broken lane markings are crossed, the system controls an electric pulse generator in the steering wheel which generates vibrations for a short time - a discreet but effective cue to countersteer immediately. Before the braking system intervenes, the steering wheel always vibrates to provide a warning.
In the event of a collision the E63 AMG Wagn is equipped with dual front, side, pelvic and curtain air bags as well a knee airbag for the driver. Rear side airbags are optional.
Key competitors
The range-topping hi-po E63 AMG Wagon no longer faces competition from rival BMW, but Cadillac comes to battle with the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, and Audi returns with the all-new Audi RS4 Avant.
