2011 Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible

Convertibles are all about fun in the sun. Perhaps the only way to make them more fun is to give them a high-performance engine and nimble handling, such as with Porsche 's Carrera Convertible.

This vehicle is based on the legendary 911 Carrera Coupe and, with the roof open, allows the driver and passenger to experience the sonorous roar of the rear-mounted flat-six.

Like its coupe counterpart, the 911 convertible features aluminum, magnesium and high-strength steel construction as well as a new convertible top design to keep weight at a minimum. Porsche also points out that the new roof design “preserves the typically sleek 911 coupe roof line.”

The end result? Porsche says the latest 911 Carrera Convertible is significantly lighter than its predecessors.

The base 911 Carrera convertible comes equipped with a 3.4L version of Porsche’s flat-six engine developing 350 horsepower. That mark is up 5 horsepower from last generation and is enough to launch the car from zero-to-60 in 4.4 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 177mph.

For those looking for a little more oomph, the 911 Carrera S convertible delivers 400 horsepower from its 3.8-liter engine, allowing for a zero-to-60 run in as little as 4.1 seconds. The S is good for a top speed of 187mph.

Both models can be equipped with Porsche’s new seven-speed manual transmission - the first seven-speed manual in the world - or the company’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch (think automatic transmission with automated control) gearbox.

Thanks to improvements and refinements to the powertrain, including switching from a 3.6-liter to a 3.4-liter straight-six, along with the seven-speed manual, fuel economy is up about 16 percent.

Other improvements to performance come not from powertrain changes, but rather a longer wheelbase, a wider front track and suspension tuning changes that combine to deliver improved driving dynamics in the form of added agility and precision in handling.

Some of the options include a navigation system, parking-assist sensors and Bose audio package.

The 911 Carrera convertible arrives with an MSRP of $97,300.

Key competitors
Although to some there is nothing like a Porsche, others will likely want to consider similar offerings that arrive in the form of the Mercedes-Benz SL, Audi R8 GT Spyder, BMW 6-Series Convertible, Maserati Gran Turismo Convertible and Jaguar XK and XKR convertibles.
