Porsche has always been careful to keep its Cayman and 911 models separate, fearing that if the Cayman ever equals its big brother in straight line performance customers might realize that its optimal mid-engine layout provides arguably better handling than the 911 for a lower price.
With the performance upgrades of the Cayman R, however, customers might start to catch on because the distance between the Cayman and base 911 has never been so small.
Porsche says that its main goal during the design of the Cayman R was to improve the two-seater even further in its performance, driving dynamics and agility through consistent weight reduction. To create the Cayman R, Porsche started with Cayman S and tacked on an additional 10 horsepower while dropping a noteworthy 121 lbs of weight. With a DIN unladen weight of just 2,855 lbs, the Porsche engineers were able to reduce the power-to-weight ratio of the coupe with standard manual gearbox to 8.6 lbs per horsepower, with the PDK version weighing in at 8.8 lbs per horsepower.
The mid-engine coupe is powered by a tuned-up 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine developing 330 horsepower. In the standard configuration it transmits power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox that propels the car from zero-to-60 mph in 4.7 seconds.
There is also an available seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission that reduces its acceleration time to 4.6 seconds.
For even more impressive sprinting performance, the Cayman R can be supplied with one of the optional Sport Chrono packages, taking it to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.
Top speed is 175 mph with either transmission.
The largest weight savings were achieved through the use of lightweight components and doing without convenience equipment. As with the 911 GT3 and Boxster Spyder, an optional lithium-ion lightweight construction battery is also available. In addition, the top model in the mid-engine coupe is equipped with the lightest 19-inch wheels the entire Porsche range can offer – the complete rim set weighs less than 40 kilograms.
The Cayman R’s purpose-built design is aggressive enough to be visible at first glance. The coupe has been lowered by 20 millimeters (0.79 inches) compared to the Cayman S, combined with the distinctive fixed rear spoiler, high-quality silver-painted wheels and numerous sporting highlights on both the interior and exterior, ensuring an individual appearance.
The black-framed headlights, black exterior mirrors and the “PORSCHE” lettering on the side – in contrasting black or silver, depending on the body color – are intended to take design cues from classic Porsche racing cars.
Key Competitors
Given its stripped-down, minimalistic nature, the Cayman R's most direct rival is the super-lightweight Lotus Elise. Other sports car competitors in this price bracket include the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and, of course, Porsche's own 911 Carrera.
