Porsche continues to expand its hybrid lineup with the unveiling of the Panamera S Hybrid. Much like the Cayenne S Hybrid, the Panamera S Hybrid is intended to deliver the best of both worlds with sportscar power and hybrid car fuel economy.

Without sacrificing its surprising sportiness, Porsche ’s latest Gran Turismo combines the total power output of 380 horsepower with best case consumption of only 41.54 mpg (imperial) of fuel based on the NEDC.

The “best case” comes from optional Michelin tires that feature a lower rolling resistance, but without them, fuel economy takes minor hit to 39.79 mpg (imperial). Porsche says that when equipped with the optional tires, the Panamera S Hybrid offers the best fuel economy of any hybrid luxury vehicle in its class.

Performance figures
The Panamera S Hybrid accelerates from a dead stop to 62 mph in 6.0 seconds, going on to reach a top speed of 168 miles per hour. The Panamera S Hybrid also features a purely electric mode that allows for travel of nearly 1.25 miles without any gasoline being consumed, at speed of up to 53 miles per hour.

The Porsche hybrid drive is also the only system in the world able to exploit additional consumption reserves thanks to so-called “sailing” on motorways and main roads. Porsche accomplishes this by disengaging and switching off the combustion engine at speeds of up to 103 mph when no power is being delivered by the combustion engine.

What’s under the hood?
The Panamera S Hybrid is driven by the same engine combination that was revealed in the Cayenne S Hybrid. The main propulsion is provided by a 3.0-liter V6 compressor engine delivering 333 horsepower, mated to a 47 horsepower electric motor. Both machines are capable of powering the Panamera S Hybrid either alone or in combination.

The electric motor also operates both as a generator and a starter. Together with the decoupler, it forms the compact hybrid module located between the combustion engine and the transmission.

The electric motor is connected to a nickel metal hydride battery (NiMh) where the electrical energy recovered from braking and driving is stored. Power transmission is handled by the familiar eight-speed Tiptronic S fitted as standard in the Cayenne models.

What’s available?
The range of standard equipment for the Panamera S Hybrid is even wider than that of the standard equipment list for the Panamera S. For example, the hybrid model is fitted as standard with the adaptive air suspension including the adaptive shock-absorber system with PASM, with Servotronic and a rear wiper.

For those who want arrestingly powerful brakes, there are the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) featuring brake calipers finished in yellow. These race-inspired high performance brake discs measure 15.35 inches (390 millimeters) in diameter at the front and 13.78 inches at the rear.

Two separate audio systems are available as options.

The “entry level” audio upgrade is a BOSE Surround Sound system developed specifically for Panamera. A total of 14 loudspeakers, a 200-watt active subwoofer as well as nine amplifier channels ensure a truly impressive aural experience. Overall output is 585 watts.

True audiophiles will opt for the Burmester sound system. Also developed specifically for the Panamera, the system has more than 372 square inches of speaker surface area that offers a dynamic sound experience comparable to a live concert. The 16 loudspeakers controlled by 16 separate amplifier channels create an overall output of more than 1,000 watts, rounded off by an active subwoofer with a 300-watt class-D amplifier.

Finally, two option packages are available that bundle together some of the previously mentioned stand alone options.

The premium package combines PASM, 14-way power seats with memory, heated seats front and rear, a heated steering wheel, Servotronic steering, a ParkAssist front and rear proximity warning system, and a lane-change alert system.

The premium plus package starts with the items from the premium package and adds a rearview camera, rear side window sunscreens, and a rear window sunscreen.

What about safety?
The Panamera S Hybird comes equipped with eight airbags, including dual front, side-impact and curtain airbags. Knee airbags are integrated into the lower part of the instrument panel and hold back the lower body of the driver and front passenger in a head-on collision.
