Now that Chrysler's Dodge brand has split off its truck division to create Ram Trucks, what was once the Dodge Ram 2500 is now a Ram 2500. The Ram 2500 fills the role of both a heavy-duty work truck and a family-hauling daily driver for many, with its springs setup for serious work without being overly stiff.
This very capable heavy duty full-size pickup truck comes with a choice of two very capable engines: a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 or 6.7-liter six-cylinder Cummins diesel.
The standard Hemi V8, which is paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission, pumps out 383 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The engine features the Multiple-Displacement System (MDS) which shuts off four cylinders under light load conditions to conserve fuel.
A 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel inline six-cylinder engine is also available. With a standard six-speed manual transmission, maximum output is 350 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque. Selecting the optional six-speed auto ups torque to a truly beastly 850 lb-ft.
The Ram 2500 maxes out with a 3,220-pound payload capacity on the regular cab 4x2 and a 13,400-pound towing capacity.
Customers can opt for two or four-wheel drive, as well as a regular cab, quad cab or the biggest mega cab.
The mega cab has a total 143.3 cubic feet and seating for up to six people. The rear seats can be folded up for a large flat load floor.
Regular and quad cabs can be equipped with either a 6.3-foot box or 8.2-foot cargo box, while the mega cab comes with only the longer 8.2-foot cargo box.
The mega cab offers 15 inches more length than an average quad cab, reclining rear seats, built-in trays and a large load floor with the rear seats folded down. Also available are a DVD entertainment system and power sunroof.
The 2500 comes in four available trim levels: ST, Big Horn/Lone Star, Outdoorsman and the top-of-the-line Laramie.
Improvements over the past 10 years have given this diesel engine 90-percent improved emissions, making it one of the cleanest burning diesels on the road.
Smoothing out the ride over even very rough terrain is a double-wishbone independent front suspension and Hotchkiss rear suspension with a solid rear axle and leaf-spring design.
Available features to make the Ram's interior more comfortable and convenient include satellite radio, a navigation system, dual-zone climate control, power adjustable pedals, power sunroof and remote start.
Key Competitors
Besides the Ram 2500, the only other options in the 3/4 ton heavy-duty pickup segment are the Ford Super Duty F-250 and the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD / GMC Sierra 2500HD twins.
