Saab’s 9-3 wagon, called SportCombi in Saab’s marketing speak, offers a surprising amount of space in a small package, a trait shared with virtually every Saab before it. The 9-3 SportCombi, first introduced for the 2006 model year, was the first station wagon for Saab’s entry-level 9-3 range.

For the current model year, the SportCombi gets freshened styling up front and out back. The edgier front end combines with clear tail lamps to give the wagon a new look, though the basic design dates to the 2005 model year and the 2008 refresh that followed it.

The SportCombi comes in two flavors: base Turbo4 and the slightly higher-performance Aero. The base model name has been changed, and the engine and transmission offerings for the Aero have also seen significant changes - but not in the direction most would have expected.

In the past, the 9-3 based model, known as the 2.0T, was the only model that featured a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that put out 210 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The Aero model then stood above its four-cylinder stablemate thanks to a 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 engine that put out 255 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Not any longer, as Saab has shed the bigger engine and placed the same four-cylinder in the base and Aero models.

Both models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, and both now share a five-speed automatic transmission as optional, where the Aero once offered a six-speed automatic. The automatic includes a manual shift lever known as Saab Sentronic manual selection.

Standard equipment on all models includes leather upholstery, OnStar, a trip computer and alloy wheels (16-inch for the Turbo4, 17-inch for the Aero).

The Aero adds a unique bodykit with dual visible exhaust outlets, more aggressive two-tone seats, aluminum interior trim, 17-inch alloy wheels and a lowered, stiffened sport suspension. It also includes a Bose audio system with a CD changer, a power passenger seat, a power moonroof and Xenon headlamps.

The Turbo4 has an available Comfort Package, which includes heated front seats, headlamp washers, inside rearview auto-dimming mirror, Universal Home Remote and front passenger eight-way power adjustable seat.

The Aero comes standard with the features found in the Comfort Package, but offers the Premium Package, which consists of heated power-adjustable, folding and light-sensitive mirrors, rear park assist and three-position memory for driver's seat and outside rearview mirrors.
