The Suzuki Grand Vitara is a compact SUV that features a willing engine, available four-wheel drive with low range, attractive styling, good space and a price that won't break the bank.

The Grand Vitara is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, which should be adequate to meet the demands of city driving and mild off-roading.

Fuel economy ratings range from 19 city, 26 highway with the rear-wheel drive model and the manual transmission, to 19 city, 25 highway with the RWD and automatic, to 19 city and only 23 highway with the automatic and four-wheel drive.

The latest generation of Suzuki interiors are more competitive than past efforts. The Grand Vitara's cabin features a clean design, good ergonomics and better quality materials.

The Grand Vitara's trim levels have received an overhaul as well, now with a base model, Premium and Limited trim levels.

The base model comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission. A five-speed automatic is optional but is standard on the Premium and Limited trims.

Sure-footed four-wheel drive can be added to any trim for a reasonable $1,450, otherwise the Grand Vitara is rear-wheel drive. Unlike much of the competition, the four-wheel-drive system has a low range, extremely useful for tricky off-road situations.

A vast array of features is standard on all Grand Vitaras including anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake-force distribution, Electronic Stability Program with traction control, front and side airbags, side-curtain airbags, digital automatic climate control, steering wheel-integrated controls, cruise control and power amenities (windows, door locks and mirrors).

Opting for the Premium model adds more to the list including Suzuki's SmartPass keyless entry and start system, a welcome seven-speaker stereo with in-dash six-disc changer and subwoofer, plus alloy wheels.

The top-of-line Limited model includes everything from the Premium and adds even more with a HomeLink wireless control system, leather-trimmed seats (heated up front) and steering wheel, plus wood-grain accents.

Opting for the Limited will command a premium as high as $5,650 to switch from the base 2WD to the Limited 4WD, or just a $4,000 premium if you stick with 2WD.

Key competitors
Suzuki's Grand Vitara competes in a crowded and booming segment, up against the likes of the top-selling Ford Escape , as well as the Honda CR-V , Chevrolet Traverse , GMC Terrain , and the Toyota RAV4 .
