New Chevy Camaro to star in Transformers movie

May31

The Chevrolet Camaro Concept will star in the forthcoming “Transformers” movie, which is due for release on July 4th, 2007 (07-04-07). The film — which was first announced last year — is a collaboration between Paramount, DreamWorks, and Hasbro. Apparently, “Bumblebee” is going to start out as a 1970s Camaro, and then be rebuilt as a 2008/2009 Camaro. Meanwhile, “Starscream” is going to be an F-22 Raptor, and “Optimus Prime” is going to be a fire truck. Judging by the license plate on the new Camaro, tuner Saleen also has involvement with the project. A Saleen Mustang police car will also appear in the film. 5. Camaro… good idea. Bumblebee as a Camaro… wtf!! He’s a Beetle! Small and friendly!

The changes to the rest of them are garbage too. Though at least the F-22 is more of a successor to the F-15 than the Camaro is to the Beetle. But Optimus Prime as a fire truck?

Forget it, I’m not watching an extended commercial.

  9. I was so excited when I heard they were making a Tranformers movie because with special FX technology today, the time seemed right. Unfortunately, they’ve also brought in today’s corporate marketing and decisions are now being made on who spends the most money. Too bad VW didn’t cough up some cash. Nothing against the Camaro or Chevy, but it’s too far from the story line.

  12. This news totally blows. How tough is it to be accurate to the origional series? I agree, Bumble bee should be a yellow bug…by the way, how hard is it to come up with a red Semi for Optimus Prime? They had another character that was a firetruck. Not that I am any longer a Transformers fan (like I was in the 1980s) but I would really like to see a few Lamborghini Countachs like they had (and I had). I do, however, like the idea of using the F-22. That’ll be cool. This will be one weird movie. Are they going back to their home planet? What about Transformers versus the Go-bots? just kidding.

  17. For those who are complaining that Bumblebee MUST be a VW Bug… I agree, it would be best, but VW has refused to allow it. Just as, from what I’ve read, Lamborgini has no desire to be associated with Transformers anymore.

I’ve heard Prime may very well be a semi, so the firetruck info could be incorrect. We’ll see when the movie gets closer to release. BTW, Inferno was the firetruck in the G1 Transformers.

As much as I’d like a movie true to the original 80’s versions, let’s face it, it’s NOT the 80’s anymore. Most of the cars and whatnot that the G1 Transformers were based on aren’t even made anymore.

Take Soundwave for example. Who sees cassette decks like that anymore? Soundwave was my favorite Decepticon and I hope they find a way to bring his most iconic traits into the new movie (ie- voice and smaller Transformers contained in his chest cavity), but I am not so stuck in the 80’s as to expect him to be a cassette deck.

I’m not too keen on the Bumblebee name on the Camaro, but who knows. This new Bumblebee might shake the ‘cute n friendly’ stigma surrounding the name. From what I’ve heard, the Police Car Mustang has a hand in destroying Bumblebee’s 70’s Camaro body. Let’s hope when he comes back as a 5th Gen he kicks the Mustangs @$$! :)

  18. If you want to represent a character named “bumblebee” automotively, do it with a Charger SRT8 SuperBee. At least it has a similar name.

But that Camaro looks pretty sweet, and I hope Steve Saleen does it well.

Bumblebee was not the main character in the series, it was Optimus. Maybe they were inspired by the Citroen commercial shown only in Europe about the nice C4 transforming into a supposedly an Autobot and GASP! dancing! A Honda ASIMO dancing is alright but an Autobot? 1. At some point, Optimus was a fire truck. You’ll find pics of an actual Transformer action figure from the 80’s of him as a fire truck. If you see pics of the promo, you’ll see a big semitruck covered in black. My guess is he’ll be like Bumblebee, start off in an older form and “transform” into the newer one.

I for one am happy they are making the movie again. Long live the Dinobots! ;)

  38. #28- Decepticons are cars and trucks nearly as much as Autobots. Stunticons come immediately to mind. As well as Runamok and Runabout. Just as the Autobots had their share of altmodes other than cars. Skyfire (Jetfire if you prefer, but I don’t) and the Aerialbots anyone? Protectobots weren’t all cars either.

I like the ‘Camaro vs Mustang’ thing being carried into the Transformers movie myself. (Though, being a Decepticon fan, I wish it were the other way around.)

#36- Fortunately you’re opinion is in the minority. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the 3rd and 4th Gen Camaros (I had a 1991 RS and 2002 Camaro) but the 5th Gen is an amazing evolution of the Camaro name. And I will be getting one shortly after it’s release.

#37- It’s glad to hear their are at least some in the younger generation with some taste. :) Most want a Civic or some such ricer…

So stop griping that he should be one. They tried. :P

  40. I agree that he should be a bug, but, thanx to VW we have to just get used to him being a camaro…. which is pretty damn cool tho, I think they made a great alternative choice. Optimus Prime was a fire truck in several other generations such as “Robots in Disguise”, and in the newer “Cybertron” line…. if they have him start off as a Mack truck and change later into a firetruck I wont be dissapointed. Roll with the punches ppl! The movie will still be great!

Oh no it gets far worse … for the human Spike is now known as “Sam” and a few of the other changes are Megatron is a Black jet in Cybertronian form and Devastator is a tank. Now I ask you is it right that they are destroying a classic 80’s cartoon icon and turning it into the crap pile of a movie?

  54. I think part of the reason they made Optimus a fire truck is because of his trailer. In the cartoon, the thing would just disappear and reappear when he would transform. Where would all the metal go in the movie?

  55. You know everybody here raises some good arguements. I’m an old school TF fan… but lets be realistic. If the movie was nothing but a souped up, special effects movie we’d really hate it. At least they sound like they are trying to make some sort of an effort to make the live action movie fresh and exciting. I personally think it will be cool to go in and see new interpretations of my old faves. Personally I think Bumblebee as a Camaro is great. Face it if you were a Transformer, what would you rather be. A girly little VW Bug, or the best looking camaro ever made? I know which I’d rather be. Or prime being a firetruck. Is a firetruck more useful in a fight than a semi? (being able to shoot water and such) Just a thought, take it as you will.

Comment by dave, posted on June10 at 1:43 pm
  56. Prime is and always will be a Semi. If they make him into a fire Truck it’s just plain wrong. I stop watching Transformers when Prime died in the movie. I will NOT go see this movie if it doesn’t have Prime as a semi AND Petter Cullen as his voice. Most people who do not care what he is, cannot be true diehard fans. Prime is my hero and I love him dearly. Either make him right or don’t make him at ALL. Just about every remake Hollywood has done to our TV shows they have totally screwed up! Look at Dukes of Hazzard. I’m tired of this. I kept my peace with Dukes of Hazzard, I will NOT with TransFormers!
Remember all the things Prime taught us. Prime never gave up on his fellow Autobots or us humans! I cannot give up on him!

…. so far, Hollywood has botched up more classic stuff than South Park could ever catch up with. With this in mind, the current latest movie … X-men was totally botched! The Phoenix is a mythical “FIRE” creature. In that movie Jean Gray looked like a VAMPIRE, and as Phoenix, she controlled ……. WATER??????? And you faithful Transformer fans are nervous about the movie being botched, accept it, it WILL BE BOTCHED!
But movie-goers will flock to the theaters to pay high amounts of monies to not only get in but consume overly-priced junk food.

  71. 1. Keep product placement out of kids movies or even movies in general for that matter. 2 Bumblebee is a VW. If Bay can’t get the licence for the bug then make him a mini, or vibe, matrix or…oh god I can’t believe I’m saying this, an echo. The point is, Bumblebee was the smallest of the Autobots (discounting roller, autobot tapes, headmaster heads and microbots when they came out) and making him a Camaro is just wrong. You want to have a yellow and black camaro? Fine call him Sunstreaker and be done with it. I mean whats next, will Grimlock be leader of the Puppybots? Point 3, OPTIMUS PRIME IS A SEMI not a bloody FIRE TRUCK. Hey Bay, if your going to kill the concept of transformig robots for everyone, just beat up on the Go-Bots franchise and leave the Transformers Universe alone.

They’re not that dissimilar character types, but hot rod’s character fits the Camaro more, its not like they’re going to stay 100% to the original series anyway.

I was a huge transformers fan, and still am, but seriously I can’t even watch the cartoon anymore without thinking how cheesy it is now. I can only imagine what was going through my parents minds when I would get up at 6am on Saturday to start watching all these cartoons…

As a side comment I don’t think that Optimus is going to be a fire truck. At least at Comic-con in San Diego last year they had a huge 18 wheeler painted exactly like Prime all shiny and red sitting in the middle of the floor. I can’t imagine them changing it after all the fans got so excited to see that.

Remeber the Cartoon was a means to sell a line of Hasbro Toys….. I think the toy dictates more when it comes to what type of vehicle they transform into rather than the short run cartoon (comapred to how many diff versions of the toy have been produced). And on the same note. Optimus has been a firetruck before….. look it up!

  81. #77, the VW (and Porsche) fears of being associated w/ “war toys” Bumblebee and Jazz, applied only to the Alternators toys, not this movie. When both companies discovered the scope of the TF movie (ie Spielberg/Bay megabudget) they realized the value of brand marketing far beyond Hasbro, and quickly changed their tune re involvement with TF.

However, by this point the filmmakers had 1) already decided that a sentient Beetle is too wimpy and Herbie-like (not macho enough for MichaelBay) and 2) were already cemented in their $$$ choice of prod-placement partnership with GM/Ford… So it was the filmmakers who decided to avoid authentic/faithful versions of classic characters.

The filmmakers get a financial piece of all toys from the movie, so it’s to their wallets’ advantage to change away from classic characters, creating unique new versions rather than old Hasbro designs.

Soundwave IS in the movie, but as a boombox who transforms into a small micro-thin menace, speaks only in digital code sounds, and whose only weapons are deadly flying discs.

Cybertron no longer exists - it’s mentioned, but was destroyed in the ancient civil war.

The screenplay focuses mostly on human characters, with minimal personalities/relationships for the robots themselves (example, Starscream is just a generic villain, no particular emotional arc re Megatron, who only shows up late, taunts Optimus into a fight, and is defeated by Sam). The story itself is very reminiscent of 1998’s Godzilla.

Tom DeSanto and Don Murphy were willing to be more faithful to the original classic beloved by fans, but unfortunately they’re not as powerful/influential at the studio level, compared to bigger titans Spielberg/Bay/DiBonaventura, who actually got the project greenlit, contractually obligated to keep DeSanto and Murphy on board yet dismissing their sincere/noble intentions. Such is the frustrating and stressful life of surviving daily struggles in HW.

  86. why is everyone complaining about them changing the characters? the Transformers went through so many changes throughout the history of the show and the comics it was hard to remember who was what vehicle and who was still alive, or who came back etc. i mean, the transformers were animals at one point! i dont remember anyone complaining about that, i think its a good idea to add something new to an old franchise…and besides, Camaros are masterpieces of automotive engineering
