New coffee table book captures essence of the Hummer brand

Perhaps General Motors designer Bob Boniface — the man heading up the Chevrolet Volt design program — said it best: "There's a little Prius in every vehicle Toyota sells and there is a little Hummer in every vehicle GM sells."

Despite the public perception of GM, the Detroit-based automaker is working hard to earn its green credential. GM has launched several new hybrid models in virtually every vehicle segment and will soon launch the electric Chevrolet Volt. But despite GM's move to green, Hummer still remains the thorn in its side.

Case in point — the new book titled "Hummer H2 - King Size America!". In true Hummer fashion, the coffee table book measures 17 by 25 inches and weighs a whopping 17 pounds. Ironically, the book's 200 pages were penned by a German automobile journalist, but he seems to have captured the essence of the brand — including a centerfold that is actually wider than the H2 (pictured).

And keeping with the theme of excess, buyers can customize their copy with their name, license plate or even their H2's VIN number.

Only 999 copies of the book will be published with U.S. sales starting in April. But potential buyers better have a bank account the size of a Hummer — the book retails for 999 euros ($1,570) in Germany.

It seems that unless GM ditches the Hummer brand complete — which is highly unlikely — it may never shake its gas-guzzling image.

  2. Jack, I hate to break it to you, but no where in the little blog post does it mention gm as publishing this book, seeing as its written by a german automobile journalist, and the price is in euros i'd tend to think that its being published out of germany. So, hate gm all you want, and crazy thing about trees, they're a renewable resource.

  5. If GM was concerned about the Hummer's "gas-guzzling image," they wouldn't have designed a vehicle with a 6400 pound curb weight. The whole point of the Hummer is not to care about fuel economy.

  7. "war and Piece" is about the same size. It took Tolstoy 3 years to complete and re-write it three times. I wonder how hard German automotive journalist had to labor to capture the essence of oversized and overpriced vehicle and undereducated proud owners of those vehicles. It must be a classic. Or yes, "War and Piece" has no centerfolds.

  8. So is this book supposed to be a a rare art piece as well?? $1750?? hmm let's see should I buy a book about a hummer or use that as part of my down payment on one?

  9. With Hummer's reputation for poor build quality, there is indeed a Hummer in every GM vehicle.

  10. what exactly is the essense of a hummer? Being a fake poser? Being a big fat truck with the off roading capabilities of a honda civic? Isn't "hummer" slang for blowjob??

  13. You'd better jump on board quickly cuz the Governator will probably buy 12 copies and 100 more to send to offices of California environmental organizations.

  14. The essence of Hummer is being enormous, ugly, fuel wasting, pathetic performance, and an overpriced brand. Hummer is probably the worst auto brand.

  15. Hummer lol what a joke of a truck. Well the H2, not the H1. Yeah hummer is slang for blow job. Hey look everyone, I drive a big giant blow job! lol

  16. The Hummer H1 was the only Hummer model I respected even though it was painfully slow, handled like crap and saw the gas station on a regular basis.

  17. In Iraq I spent a lot of time in the back of a HMMWV. Most people who drive these have absolutely NO idea what they're really meant for. Take an IED at 45 MPH while the Duece on the roof is smoking Hajjis, yeah. Use it to drive the kids to daycare and do the groceries, no.

  18. Like jabari mentioned, some of the bmw's, benzes and most big ass cars with large engines get shitty gas mileage. It's not like Hummer is the only one. So it's bigger than anything on the road, so is a 7 series. I love how environmentalist groups were going around to Hummer dealers and trashing them. As if only people that bought Hummers were wasteful and not concerned of the environment. I don't get it.

  21. Barnes and Nobles and Borders book stores were both sold out of their copies of this awesome retrospect. Hummer is an American icon respected around the world as the epitome of off roading prowess and quality, durable construction. You people haven't got a fricken clue what you're babbling about.

  25. Hummer is the current poster child for greenie's just as the Ford Excursion was in the late 90's early 00's. Granted I agree that the H-2 is pretty silly and the people that drive them , even worse. But to pick on just one company, (I know all the GM/domestic/America haters, how could I forget)Toyota has it's share of fullsize SUV's and pickups as well as Nissan, Ford , Chrysler and just like some said earlier any v-8 powered luxury/exotic car from Germany and Italy. A bunch of America hating biased idiots on here. Yes the book is pretty stupid and no, it is not a book from GM.

  26. well put jabari and hateful83. Mercedes and BMW and Ferraris and Lamborghinis don't get any better gas mileage from their vehicles that are in their respective classes. Anyways I somewhat question the functionality of Hummer as a brand. I don't know about you people but I can't even keep track of how many H2's and H3's I see on the road everyday (usually by young women and soccer moms). As long as they are selling (They aren't selling as well lately with rising gas prices) GM is going to keep them around.

Comment by Need4SSpeed, posted on March28 at 3:54 pm
  27. H2 and H3 sell like crazy across the Country. It's the jap crap like the LandCruisers and land Rovers that are taking a beating with the current gas crunch. Americans are going to continue their love for the Hummers, no matter what the cost. In the end it is worth it to be one of those lucky people who get to drive the best SUV's on the damn planet.

Comment by Need more oil for GM, posted on March28 at 4:04 pm
  28. Check your facts idiot, Hummer sold exactly 750 H2's in February 2008. I would not call that selling like crazy.

  29. jump: funny shit!
More oil: I wouldn't call a Land Cruiser "crap." It's the only toyota I'd consider owning.
But i'd only buy one if I were going off-road.
