New details emerge on Lotus APX, Esprit

At the Geneva Motor Show, Lotus showed an interesting crossover concept called Lotus APX Concept. The British automaker sent mixed messages about production of the car. On one hand, they said “it is not a concept indicating a strategic direction of Lotus Cars.” On the other hand, they said it could be built. How could this be? According to AutoExpress, another automaker could take on production. “If another manufacturer wanted to sell the APX, it could be on the road as it’s seen here,” a Lotus spokesman told the magazine. That would explain why the APX doesn’t have a traditional Lotus badge. It would also explain why Lotus went to the trouble of meeting safety and emissions regulations. But perhaps even more important to Lotus than the concept itself is the architecture under its skin. The first production car to benefit from the firm’s VVA underpinnings will be the 2008/2009 Lotus Esprit, the report said. The spokesman told AutoExpress the jury was still out on the Esprit name.
