New details have emerged about the next-generation Jeep Wrangler, which we first reported on last week. Sources say the off-roader — which will be offered in two- and four-door configurations — will feature removable t-tops for the front, and a regular hardtop for the rear. It will also feature a flip-down windshield and removable doors. Recent published reports also indicate it will feature a higher ground clearance and added skid-plates. In our last report, we noted that the new Jeep would be “considerably wider and longer than today’s Wrangler, with exterior styling said to resemble that of the Jeep Gladiator concept truck unveiled in January at the Detroit auto show.â€? And while the Wrangler’s exterior becomes more rugged, its interior will reportedly become more luxurious and upscale. As with the previous-generation Wrangler, Jeep will continue to offer a Rubicon Edition. Jeep is also rumored to be planning a CRD diesel powerplant in addition to the 2.4-liter, 3.7-liter, and 5.7-liter gasoline offerings.

Since the Dakar 4dr wrangler concept. Many were hoping for a 4dr wrangler over a jeep liberty. With the unlimited long bed. It also can be converted into a small pickup by removing the back seats and getting an aftermarket fiberglass cab cover. For those who miss the wrangler pickup scrambler.
As for a CRD wrangler. It’s been long over due. Jeep TJL for the military market was offered with at first a VM 2.5L crd then upgraded to the VM 2.8L crd when it came out. Jeep, in overseas markets, should have made the diesel available to the public. What would sell a wrangler better than better fuel mileage and lots of low end torque. Personally I hope they offer a range of diesels. Like maybe from the dodge caliber’s, jeep patriot line up, the VW 2.0L 134hp 229lb-ft/310Nm or maybe the new MB 2.0L 140hp 300Nm from the MB A200 CDI(in comparison: 2.4L world motor 170hp 140lb-ft/224Nm, 3.7L 210hp 235lb-ft/319Nm) for the 2dr base se model wrangler. VM 2.8Lcrd 160hp 295lb-ft for the 4dr and 2dr X, sport, unlimited models. Rubicon model to have the MB 3.0L crd 218hp 376lb-ft/510Nm from the grand cherokee & commander.

Regular fixed hardtop or removable hardtop for the 4-door?
I know the Gladiator showed a fixed hardtop with dual moonroofs, but I think a removable top is a must for it to be a real Jeep Wrangler TJL successor.
I am concerned with the “its interior will reportedly become more luxurious and upscale” comment. I hope the execs over DCx remember that the base Wrangler is supposed to be affordable. Sure option the heck out of it, but make sure the average Joe can afford it in base trim levels. And don’t forget the wash out interior.
Personally I am huge fan of diesels, I’m sure we can work with either the 2.8L 4cyl or 3.0L V-6 CRDs but I think we should just limit it to one. And drop the 4 cyl petrol engine altogether, it’s worthless.

As a long time Jeep lover as myself. I applaud the return of the longer Unlimited and the Rubicon extras. I would of bought a CJ8 over a TJ if they were not so rare. I think the 4 door will also appeal to the common family man. However, it sounds like they are forgetting what makes a Jeep a Jeep. When I heard the Unlimited would come with a flip back front section roof I was estatic, but it was only offered with automatics. Then came the next year and 6 speed transmissions. Now it sounds like they are looking to get away from soft tops all together. To me this would be a big mistake. One of the big appeals to the jeep is the removeable top and open door design. During the summer months I constantly meet other Jeep drivers who are sitting there in the open air and just enjoing the ride. That is one of the jeeps’ greatest appeals, it would be assame to stray from that image.
