You wannabee stylist make me laugh. Name any other SUV that has been basically unchangeable since 2003 and still looks modern inside and out, and puts up half the sale numbers of the GX. It is due for a redesign, but for its time defined mid size luxury SUVs.

LS7
The Sequioa Platinum is $60k, similar to what a loaded GX costs

Lexus isn't SUVs on performance, they leave that to the Germans. Look at the power-to-weight ration on the new RX. They will do anything to protect the HUGE profit margins in the LX. If you drive the new 4.6, you won't find it lacking in power. A GX with the same engine would definiely hurt LX sales.

Toyota Tundra had more power than any domestic truck for 18 months, and it only caused a dent in domestic truck sales, not a market shift. There are many variables in a models sales, power is only one of them.

Rav4 has the smallest third seat on Earth, so it can't really compete with the Highlander. Trust me, there is VERY little demand for 3rd seat Rav4s. Rav4 has the most powerful, best V6 in it's class, and still trails Escape and CR-V in sales.

Lexus GS has never sold well, when it was more powerful than the Germans (1998 MT Car of The Year), or less powerful, and that is normal in that class to have V6 models outsell V8s 4 or 5 to 1. Infiniti sells VERY few FX50s

Your insight on how cars sell is......interesting. My guess is you haven't worked the sales floor much, or read the sales sheets in a few years.

The Sienna was updated in 2004 getting a 3.3 V6 to replace the 3.0 V6, plus a new body style. The first to introduce a 60/40 fold to the floor 3rd row seating. The Odyssey was the first to introduce third row fold to the floor, but you had to fold the whole row. Of course, when the 05 odyssesy showed up, it had the 60/40 fold split as well.

The Sienna got a new engine in the 2007 model year 3.5 V6. With Sienna sales slowing down as it is, am not surprised it is taking them until 2011 to get new sheet metal. Plans for a hybird version has died down after hearing a lot of talk about it in 2007.

winnipegjets: what are you talking about? a top of line Sequoia is still cheaper than the GX. of course the GX should have the 5.7L. not only that, if offers better value. compare with direct competitions--land rover LR3, Merc ML550, etc... the merc gets a 5.4L V8 with 388HP. Why is it so hard for Lexus to be competitive with 5.7L 382HP? Does 4.6L with barely over 300HP sound appealing to you? Makes no sense. Maybe the thought is not to canabalize their own LX570, but that's just bullshit. You don't see Rav4 with 3 row seating and 3.5L V6 eating up Highlanders. Another Lexus decision that is an epic failiure. Why do you think GS460 does not sell at all? People much rather have a 388HP E550 or 360HP 550i, than a 342HP GS360. GS350 on the other hand, sells, because it is competitive--trumps the E350, rapes the 530i, and keeps up with 535i. Despite all this green bullshit and economic woes, horsepower still sells, because people see VALUE in horsepower.

i wouldnt be surprised if they did an option package with the 5.7 that encroaches on lx price range. however, on the sequoia the 5.7 is only available on the higher end models, so its really not dumb on their part to do this. also, the sequoia and the gx cater to two completely different markets, so having the 4.6 in there in that respect isnt a bad choice on that part.

DrFill - 2011 Sienna, 2010 is a carryover (how long has this Sienna been out?) Another thing people overlook with Toyota is their LONG product cycles for non-car products. like the last Highlander being out nearly 8 years and the current Sienna since 2002. Complain about GM/Ford, but Toyota does it too.

The GX will continue to be based off of the 4Runner, amortizing the costs of the platform
Lexus/Toyota hasn't found another use for the HPX crossover platform for Toyota, so no one vehicle platforms.

The 2010 Sienna should offer the platform for the HPX, IMO.

BTW, the GX has been VERY successful for Lexus, easily outselling key rivals, and was a great design, very well done.
But it's time to move to a larger crossover platform
And you obviously don't use the 5.7 so you protect LX sales.
That's Sales and Marketing 101

You'll see the next 4Runner this winter in Japan, or at LA or Chicago next year

Oh awesome, I hope to see a headlight that's similar to the new RX. The new GX should design to be wider, bigger, lower, and more compact, so I will buy that SUV instead of the FairladyZ in 2010.

Lexus needs to change the body style. The GX is too tall & narrow. It look awkward from the rear. My friend's parents have one and you can't even lay down golf bags in the trunk in either directions, you actually have to stand them up! Considering most compact and midsize cars can hold 3-4 sets of golf bags it's pathetic that a biggish SUV cannot.

Why not throw in the 5.7L V8 in there... 381HP.
Sometimes, Lexus does some weird things. Like castrating the 4.6L in the GS460 (LS460 gets 380HP, while GS460 gets only 342HP). Now, they want to castrate the GX.
Sure, buyers will be concerned with fuel consumption, etc.. but none of these big SUVs are fuel sippers anyway. Besides, considering the 3.5L V6 in truck app makes 272HP, 310HP from a V8 sounds lame. Yeah, you get much better low RPM torque.. but still.. go with the 5.7L. It suchs that a cheaper Sequoia will get it, and GX won't.

Why not throw in the 5.7L V8 in there… 381HP.
It suchs that a cheaper Sequoia will get it, and GX won’t.
