Mazda’s long-rumored RX-7 model has regained its place in the automotive spotlight, with the latest reports out of Europe claiming to have the lowdown of the upcoming sports car’s powertrain.

According to Autocar, the new-age RX-7 will arrive sometime in 2013 packing a turbocharged version of Mazda’s rotary engine. Although no confirmation has been given by Mazda, it is believed that the RX-7 will be the first vehicle to use the company’s new 1.6-liter Renesis 16X Wankel rotary engine.

However, the RX-7 might not come equipped with your run-of-the-mill turbocharger. According to one inside source, an electric turbo is still on the table. “We’re testing the rotary in conjunction with technologies including an electric turbocharger.”

Mazda engineers still have some time to sort out the details as the RX-7 – which will likely be badged as the RX-9 – is still a few years away from production. But whatever the case, expected the next Mazda sports car to develop between 200 and 300 horsepower, with much improved torque and fuel economy.
