Although Ford continues to deny that it is shopping around its Volvo brand, a new report has surfaced that confirms the Dearborn-based automaker has been in talks with at least two different automakers about the sale of its lone Premier Auto Group brand.
According to Automotive News, Ford has had at least two separate discussions with Renault about the possible sale of Volvo. The initial negotiations reportedly broke down due to price differences, but the two automakers rekindled talks late last year.
Ford has also had talks with China’s Dongfeng Motor Group – the nation’s third-largest automaker – about acquiring the Swedish brand.
Earlier this month it was reported that Ford had been in contact with China’s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. about the sale of Volvo, a rumor that was later proven to be untrue. However, it’s possible that sources simply confused Dongfeng with SAIC.
Whatever the case, it doesn’t sound like anything materialized from the talks and Ford is still sticking to its story “that Volvo is not for sale.” We’re sure we haven’t heard the last on the fate of Volvo.

Might as well you’ve sold everything else off. So stupid! After you’ve killed off Mercury and Lincoln what then? Start selling off the rights to the cars? How much will you give me for Mustang????

It is kind of stupid to have a Premier Automotive Group with only one nameplate.

I don’t see why they couldn’t have just sold it in other countries. Now if your so convinced that it won’t sell you slash and burn it all so your other brands (Lincoln) won’t have to FREAKIN compete with it DUHHHHHH! Real smart there FLM. I think they could have shrunk it down pulled out of the US and sold it in other countries like China. But there so damned obsessed with selling thousands a week that they can’t see it. Hey didn’t sell 10k this month! This brands played out lets sell. Hell Yeah!

ihustle, the PAG has one marque now that Land Rover and Jag are gone: Volvo. Mercury and Lincoln are just divisions of regular old Ford. But don’t let the facts get in the way of a good opportunity to show your ignorance.

I believe Ford owns roughly one third of Mazda, but Mazda has never been part of PAG or wholly owned by Ford.

Ford would be stupid to sell Volvo, it’s their best asset! Mulally, this isn’t Boeing selling a small and miserable parts company, this is Ford selling a vital company with thousands of experienced engineers.

Volvo kicks the crap out of Ford in the R&D department, and yet Ford uses none of the tech that is sitting in front of them on a silver plate. Volvo has cars with lane departure warnings, sensors to tell when the driver is sleepy, three-stage airbags, tons of safety features Ford is too cheap to put in their own models.

A hybrid flex-fuel car with four motors, one in each wheel, and it is a working prototype, not a car show hype job. Does Ford capitalize on that? No. They have a gift horse and don’t use it. I say sell Volvo to a European house or to Holden, to someone who can fund them and actually spread their tech around.

Although Volvo isn’t exactly setting the sales charts on fire in the U.S., I do think it will be a shame to see Ford sell the division. I think Volvo has provided some technical expertise to the Ford Corporation. If selling it helps keep Ford alive and kicking in the long run, I do think it is in their best interests to sell it though.
If Ford does sell Volvo, I hope it doesn’t end up under the control of a Chinese company. Nissan/Renault, BMW, Daimler, or Peugeot/Citroen would be preferable choices as future owners of Volvo.

I see S40s and S60s as well as XC90s constantly in Phoenix and Scottsdale; they may not sell well out in the sticks, but in the urban centers Volvo seems to do well. The new S80 seems to have caught on with the country club set, at least.

Apparently, one thing he never learnt was the art of spelling.
Anyway, he knows nothing about Mazda and Ford, or Volvo for that matter.

Lol at ihustle for being so immature and believing that Ford owns Mazda. The fact is, as espoused by johnnycanuck, Mazda has never been apart of PAG and Ford owns less than 25% of that company. further, it is the most profitable company in the Ford network.

The best thing that could happen to Volvo would be a Ford sale. Renault/Nissan would be a good move, BMW would be great, but incredibly unlikely. Admittedly I don’t know enough about the Chinese companies mentioned in the article to have an opinion there, I’m open to information on that one! Volvo has gotten stale, and a change in hands would likely reinvigorate the brand and increase sales.
