This car is great, nice design and great engine for its small size. It is fun to drive and the quality is good. Well for all those hummer lovers out there, in europe we don't even think of buying a gas guzzling tank like that, apart that the design is horrible. Anyway american car market needs a nice polish before we europeans even get to consider them

Here in England they do go real well, we remap them and get the bhp up fine. They easily do 90mph on the road

Well, let's see the facts of this situation. You've got the solid steel rollcage there to do what it does best- and that is to protect you from those rednecks and their hummers. It actually works really well, and yes, it does pass all US safety standards and such. I am personally interesting in buying a smart myself, so too bad for all you haters.

JD - no umcalm-ness going on here, not even the tinsiest bit. My point is just that most of the folks poking (semi-deserved, see below) fun at the Smart not only have no idea what they're talking about, they don't even attempt to read up on the topic before doing so.

I've actually had a Smart rental for two days in Germany and was shocked just how huge the thing feels on the inside and how high of a seating position you're in - you're literally looking down on any person sitting in a VW Golf/Jetta/Passat, for example. The car itself is also surprisingly tall - 1.54m (60.6") compared to 1.48m (58.25") for a Golf V.

All that being said, I would never buy that "egg on wheels" - the engine is pathetic, the transmission is terrible and the interior looks like it came straight out of a cartoon for 7-year old kids (not to mention the laughable quality of the plastics used).

The reason I say that Eff, is that with the ground clearance of an H2 or other large SUV, it's possible a Smart could go right underneath the wheels. Stay calm Eff. Stay calm.

Ah, the good old (and quite idiotic) "bigger = safer" theory. Reading up on the topicbefore commenting would seem like a good idea. The protection offered by a Smart is no worse (or better, methinks) than that of any other econobox sold in the US.

i live in canada and a buddy of mine has one .. the fortwo is a ROLLCAGE .. that is why it basically becomes a 'cannonball' as Eric put it. despite the fact that 2 ppl can tip it over .. when it is in motion towards a crash, i'd rather be in a smart than most sedans (dunno if i could say the same about the smart vs. any fullsize SUV)

Actually, I've heard that those little Smarts turn into "cannonballs" and often do more damage to the bigger vehicles than they sustain themselves.

Hahah....no joke. Is that little guy up to U.S. safety standards? Imagine an H2 (or anything for that matter) T-boning that Fisher Price-esque car. Devastation.
