millions??? i seriously doubt there are millions of suburbans on the road. i might be wrong though, but that just seems sooo high. anyone know the actual number of suburbans produced in one year?

I guess noone was considering that there are less than 1000 Veyron's on the road... while there are millions of Suburbans. Let's not look at the output of one single vehicle... let's look at the output of the entire production run.

Great. You've showed us that some of the rarest cars on the road, when taken individually, can be called "dirty." Now, let's take the most common cars on the road (Camrys, F-150s, Tahoes, etc) and stack them against the same cars, this time factoring in the total quantity of each. Anyone care to guess which side will be dirtier?

>howsmydriving
>
>What green activists should really be targeting are old cars.

Yep, let's give them more ammunition to take all of the greatest machines ever created off the road. Then we can all go down to our local Honda dealership, buy gray Honda Civic Hybrids, and all smile and wave at the pretty trees and birds.

Are you serious? You're talking a massive undertaking that would take quite an economic feat for some people. Not everyone can afford to trade in their 1985 Oldsmobile in for a 2000 Chevrolet. Not everyone has such sparkling credit that enables them to just ditch their old car in favor of a new one. To top that off, not everyone wants to take on another vehicle payment.

And furthermore, not everyone *likes* newer automobiles. The most fun I had in a car was in my dad's 1957 Plymouth Belvedere running a 318 and a push button automatic. It rode better, tracker straighter and ran smoother than any of the new cars I've been in, from Nissan Sentras to Honda Civics to the new Malibu to the Prius - heck, not even some luxury cars ride as nice as the older machines do.

howsmydriving, one thing you've got to take into consideration in the "old car legislation" is that not everyone is convinced that they need to submerge themselves in debt to contribute to the environment. I, for one, am one of those people.

One thing I can say about this article.
As much of a petrolhead I am, who gives a shit if supercars are more polluting? Sorry to break this to the eco-mentalists but if you haven't known, rich petrolheads who actually care about supercars don't give a damn if it's polluting the environment, someone else who's interested in a so-called-Prius Hybrid (which isn't that eco-friendly if you do the research) can go and become environmentally conscious on our behalf. We'll have our own fun while eco-mentalists can stick to their own business.

The university of Connecticut ran the study that "proved" the prius had a larger pollution impact over 100,000 miles than a hummer h2 did over 300,000. They used SCIENCE, and INDUSTRY STANDARDIZED information on production, materials, efficiency, engineering, chemicals, market forces, and performance, if you cannot accept their results as fact you can throw out every EPA rating, crash test rating metallurgical study and production figure from every manufacturer. They played by the rules, got the information right, and put 2 and 2 together. Simple facts remain, Americans are very unclear as to what real pollution is and what are merely less than ideal emissions. And we apparently have forgotten that there is a lot more to a vehicle than what you see in a show room. Find some pictures of the nickel plant in canada that produces the nickel for the prius' batteries.

Hey, did you hear that the latest theory is that volcanoes caused the dinos to die out. Not a rock hitting the earth. Too much CO2 put out over in India by huge volcanoes. Golly, who should I believe?

I'm sorry but last time i checked, the sky wasn't falling! what is that supposed to mean??? just because this theory came from science doesn't mean its true. science is more wrong than right! and what are you a scientist or something? you talk as if you are the smartest person on the planet, when in reality, you just pass along info you hear from other places. I will say what ever i want to say because i think we are entitled to think and say what we all believe is right. just like some people didn't believe Bush when he said "there is definite proof of weapons of mass destruction..." most people believe what he said because they didn't want to be left out, while other denied and the truth comes out now.
where are you getting all this faith and religion crap from??? that paragraph seems like the lame sh!t people force you to believe on church tv shows and whatever other bullsh!t there is. you don't need to be the smartest person on the planet to come up with your own reason, unless you like to follow everyone like in the Bush case. God gave us a brain, use it! drinking has nothing to do with this argument and it is stupid that you even brought that up!

i never said that people don't cause any pollution, i just said that i don't think the current climate crisis is directly linked to humans. And there IS NO PROOF that anyone can provide to prove that humans are the direct cause. scientist can't even say that. while there is something going on, i think it is just mother nature doing its thing. its not like the ice is going to stay the same for decades! it has to either melt or grow.

idrinorbarsaku,

I will add this to my argument:

Whether you believe human activity is to blame for Global warming or not; Mother Nature does not need any help.

Just because you can not fathom the sheer amount and types of pollution Human civilization produces does not mean it does not exist. Again even if you don't believe what others say, believe your own experience. When did the rains not come when you thought or in the quantities they would? When did Winter become so short and mild (If you are in Canada or North of the Mason-Dixon you might not notice that as easily)? Why are the storms coming on so frequently and/or so strong?

“Don’t believe what people say when they say the sky is falling. Look up for yourself.”

Scientists, Farmers, and at least average observant people, will tell you the same thing, in effect, "the sky is falling."

"God gave you a brain to think, not to drink.”

Science is based in observation and deductive reason. It is not a religion. Faith and miracles have nothing to do with it. Leave your "casual mysticism" in you church, temple, masque, or synagogue. Far smarter people than you will figure out the "why", but you can observe and see that there is a "what". There is no faith but the faith that you will find the answer before it is too late.

When one side of extremely smart people give you a long drawn out reason why a thing is and the other side can only say "no, it's not", listen to the long drawn out explanation. At least, the smart people said something useful.

BTW, I think they tagged VW's diesel engines and larger engines, like the one in the Veyron. They are extremely good, but not really the cleanest. Crappy? Not! Clean? They could be worse. It really has more to do with the fuel itself. Bio-Diesel is best but low-sulfur Diesel will do as well to fix much or the problem.

i think it's retarded that CO2 is being blamed for everything in this place. there are more people walking the earth, more animals walking....of course there is going to be a little more CO2, but it isn't the reason why the ice caps are melting! if the ice caps are melting and we are to blame, then who is to blame for causing the time before the ice age, the actual ice age, and the melting of the ice age????????????????? all this stuff is a joke and even scientist can't provide proof that is factual enough for everyone to agree on.

With that said, this goes back to the comment about vw's crappy engines....
YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!!!!!!! and it shows on that stupid biased comment

C6Racer,

Are you trying to be funny or just stupid? If you have no idea how Global Warming works then you really have no place commenting about. Mindless skepticism is no replacement for actual knowledge or intelligence. Subscribing to obvious propaganda speaks poorly of you, as well.

Earth's atmosphere is composed of numerous gases, mostly nitrogen (Or else everything would catch fire like dry California Brush in a lightning storm). Among those gases, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is an insulating gas. The more insulation you have the more heat you retain. Much like a green house, such that the glass retains heat while letting in light, hence the original name for this phenomenon, "The Green House Effect".

The Sun heats the Earth but normally most of that heat it reflecting into space by polar ice and dense cloud cover. However, CO2 captures more of this heat energy raising the temperature of the planet. It is not outrageous change but the "little" changes, the average person can observe in daily life, like the altering of rain patterns and severity of storms and the shortening or blurring of Seasons. Other effects like melting polar caps and mountain ice and snow caps are also endemic of this problem and further contribute by exposing bare rock and comparatively dark open ocean to the sun so they capture more heat causing further climatic shift.

It is true that pursuing greener, less polluting, technologies is a way to make money. However, it is spurred on by the consumer who now, after years and numerous attempts to hide the truth until it perhaps too late, either out of economic or politic convenience, knows the truth of the situation, wishing for a cure-all but often willing to settle for doing some small part in, at the very least, keeping things from getting worse.

The trick is to make sure you are actually polluting less. On the whole, a Prius is more polluting than an H2.

But it is not always easy to get the facts in a world where it is easier to fall for double talk than to listen to straight talk. That likely why you bought that Mock-umentary.

"Do better because better is there to do."
"Don't believe it what people say when they say the sky is falling. Look up for yourself."
"God gave you a brain to think, not to drink."

What an outrage! How dare you, LLN, refer to these vehicles as "dirty" and, worse still, regard them as worse than SUVs in this respect! It is your obligation as a quasi-formal news organization and group of car enthusiasts to defend our beloved supercars to the grave! Where is your media bias? Why is this even news? I would hazard a guess that not one of the ~300 Veyrons produced has put out more CO2 than any commercially used SUV or even hybrid-powered taxi.

@C6Racer: LOL! I love satire. You're cool, man.

Food for though:

Does one weighing in at 350 lbs put out more "pollutants" than say one that weighs 175?

So maybe a person weighing in at 175 lbs would be qualified to drive the Veyron, while one weighing in at 350 lbs should really be driving a Miata?

Silly.

Haha, it's funny how people believe that CO2 is actually the cause of global warming when it is, in fact, the effect. The sole cause of global warming is that big bright thing in the sky that we educated people like to call the Sun. The only reason that the theory of CO2 being at fault is being supported by the government is because it's a money maker.
Look up a documentary called "The Great Global Warming Swindle". It's a video for the idiots who are too blind to see the obvious.

Emissions testing is for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and NOx (Nitrogen Oxide NO and Nitrogen Dioxide NO2) that result from the burning of hydrocarbons under high temperatures. When exposed to sunlight they form tropospheric Ozone O3 - SMOG. This has nothing to do with CO2 (Carbon Dioxide).

DB9

PS. For CO2 Please read up on and/or google the Earths Carbon Cycle
