Newcomers could ding Jeep’s image

03/21/2006, 8:16 AM

By admin

Jeep is about to introduce two vehicles — Compass and Patriot — that could ruin the brand’s image, according to James R. Healey of USA Today. Both models are considerably ’softer’ than traditional Jeeps. “If the new models sell poorly or dilute the rugged image, Jeeps might need large sales incentives. That’s good for buyers but bad for Jeep profits and bad for current owners, who’d see their Jeep’s value decline,” writes Healey. One Jeep enthusiasts expressed the concern of many owners effectively: “They’re diluting the brand with soccer-mom grocery-getters. Unfortunately, there’ll be a market for them,” said Chris Rayborn, 34, an officer of the Midwest Jeepthing club based in St. Louis. “They will offend the Jeep purists, and Jeep will lose the loyalty it’s had.”

Releasing that Compass will definitely ruin the brand’s image. It’s nasty looking.

Seriously, the IDEA isn’t wrong, it’s the badge. I seldom have complaints about the direction DCX has gone, but THIS should be a Plymouth. I know you know what I mean! Save the Jeep name for something (in their own words) “Trail Rated”.

I love what DCX has been doing lately, but this is a turkey. Make the Gremlin look sexy.

I agree, it is no the prettiest bird…but it is better looking in person and the ralley package looks pretty tuff, The AWD version under 20k and great gas mileage. Hey if chevy can sell the malibu Maxx(Gack) whata turd…..the JEEP is pretty cool in person.

At least the Patriot looks Jeepy. The Compass has a fat face – jowls like Wilford Brimley’s. I can see a place for the Patriot – getting all those who loved the old Cherokee’s look and aren’t into the Liberty – but the Compass smacks of pandering to a non-existent market. It’d probably make a good small Dodge SUV – after a facelift…

What about the Liberty? That thing doesn’t exactly go along with the rest of the Jeep machismo reputation. It’s pretty much just a RAV4 with a few Jeep styling cues.

Hahah…Wilford Brimley’s jowls. That’s exactly it.
