Next Audi RS4 to use supercharged V6; A3 lineup set to expand

07/14/2008, 6:46 PM

By Drew Johnson

Audi has already revealed that its next S4 sedan will be powered by a supercharged 3.0L V6, but a new report finds the S4 will not be the only A4-variant to use the blown engine. Sources inside Audi have revealed that the M3-rivaling RS4 will also use the supercharged mill.

The engineering mole failed to reveal the RS4’s horsepower rating, but did confirm with Car Magazine that the powerplant will essentially be the same engine used in the S4. Audi has yet to announce output figures for the S4, but it is widely believed that it will hit the market with at least 330 horsepower. Therefore, look for the RS4 to be pushing about 400-420 horsepower, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see a final figure closer to 450.

Although the RS4’s main competitors now use V8s, the insider isn’t worried about market acceptance. After all, the original RS4 used a forced induction V6 and the most resent RS4 actually sparked the jump to V8s. “They [BMW, Mercedes, Lexus] have followed, but now we will go back,” the source told Car.

The supercharged V6 should offer V8 levels of torque but return much better fuel economy.

The next RS4 is also slated to get Audi’s dual-clutch seven-speed S-tronic gearbox.

Despite the S4’s and RS4’s jump to supercharged V6s, don’t look for the S5 to make similar changes. According to Audi sources, the V8 actually better suits the car’s luxury image. In that same vein, the S5 will continue to be offered with a standard slush box rather than the sportier S-tronic unit.

Finally, Car’s report speculates that Audi’s A3 line is set to expand, with the inclusion of a Q3 which will be based on the Cross Coupe Quattro concept.

====>>Supercharged 3.0V6? Sounds good to me. But more than 350hp[period], not to mention 420+ from a pressurized 3.0? Thinking about physics, i would kinda question the long-run reliability of such a powerplant. Nomatter what brand its from[excluding porsche lol].

More faux news about a company that makes faux-enthusiast cars for faux enthusiasts, and their wives.

howsmydriver: HAHAHA.. good call. Audi needs to just make better V8s. 13mpg/city and 20mpg/high on the RS4 is just pure stupid. That is much worse than the LS2 CTS-V (6.0L V8), that gets 16/25.

Audi loves to bull**** a lot. They love to advertise technology, but in real life, it falls flat on its face.
I love how they talk about A8’s aluminum structure–yet it ends up being the heaviest in its class.
I also love a couple gen old A4 advertising 5-valves per cylinder–yet it ended up being the slowest in its class.
VW says Passat 2.0T is efficient 200HP–when it only manages to get indentical gas mileage as a 3.5L 268HP Toyota Avalon.
Stop selling fake technology Audi. Talk about what your cars can DO, not what your car is MADE OF.

Mugensentraken, the original B5 RS4 made 380hp from a 2.7t biturbo. I think this will handle the job nicely.

audi needs to go back to forced sixes, their eights have never been anything to write home about, and every turboed engine they have ever put out has been brilliant. I dont personally like superchargers, i love turbos to the grave, but this is a step in the right direction.

their biturbo 10 is a masterpiece, the biturbo 8 of the old RS6 was uncanny, and the 2.7t is still an amazing piece of machinery today. They need to stop this S-tronic crap and keep a 6 speed in the RS4.

If VWAG has learned anything with the R32 its that a “tuner car image” comes with that slushbox. Why do you think the original sold so fast and the current one is still sitting on dealer lots?

I don’t know howsmydriving, Audi has been making strides. They’re in the process of putting out a special edition TT that MotorTrend praised as being their best sportscar and considered it a good match for the cayman & 911. Also the R8 is a decent machine, along with the S4 & RS4 (all their S models really). I’m not even a big Audi fan, but they do make some decent enthusiast oriented cars.

I’ll give props to Audi for trying to use a blower. Eaton’s new TVS series units put a lot of power in a compact package… it’s much easier to install and manage than turbos… and you don’t have to worry about wear nearly as much.

Now the transmission, I dunno… how many gears does a car really need? Isn’t a good ol’ close ratio 6-speed enough? Once you get to 7 or 8 gears they have to invent some kind of computer program to shift the darn thing for you or all the drivers time would be spent rowing through the gears… not to mention how much a 7 or 8 speed tranny weighs. Are sports cars eventually going to turn into big-rigs with 16 forward gears and 3 reverses?
