It has yet to land in U.S. showrooms, but BMW is already planning big changes for its 2015 X1 crossover. BMW will reportedly switch to a front-wheel drive MINI platform the basis of the next-generation X1.

According to the UK's Autocar, BMW is planning to shift the X1 from its current rear-wheel drive platform to a new front-wheel drive setup sometime during 2015. The X1's new platform - dubbed UKL (German for "˜Unter Klasse' or "˜entry level') - will also be shared with the next-generation MINI Countryman.

Although the X1 will be losing its rear-wheel drive layout, its shared platform with the Countryman will ensure that all-wheel drive will remain on the options list. The X1's switch to a transversely mounted engine should also result in a roomier cabin.

However, that transversely mounted engine will likely be the death knell for the X1's six-cylinder engine. BMW has previously stated that it has no plans to alter its current six-pots for use in front-wheel drive cars, so the X1 will likely be four-cylinder only. However, there is the possibility that BMW could fit the next-generation X1 with a new three-cylinder engine.

BMW will unveil a new 1-Series GT concept based on the UKL platform at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, which could give us some more insight into the X1 program. Until then keep checking this space for any updates.
