Next-gen Bentley Arnage to move up-scale?

05/28/2009, 11:11 AM

By Drew Johnson

The Bentley brand is already fairly close to the top of the automotive hierarchy, but the British automaker will reportedly move its flagship Arnage even further up-scale for the next iteration. The Arnage recently ended production but will resurface by the end of next year.

According to AutoTelegraaf, Bentley will push the next version of the Arnage upscale to compete with the likes of Rolls-Royce and Maybach. Codenamed “Project Kimberly”, the next Arnage will be based on the Audi A8’s platform but will share little else with any vehicles under the Volkswagen corporate umbrella.

The next Arnage is reportedly earmarked for a “unique” V8, which we suspect is the marque’s tried and true 6 ¾ liter V8. A diesel offering has been rumored but Bentley will most likely offer an E85 powertrain to satisfy the growing green movement. Regardless, power will be sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed transmission.

Compared to the last-generation model, the next Arnage will grow in almost every dimension – including length and width. That added size should help the Arnage better compete with its rivals from Britain and Germany.

A performance Arnage T is also planned, but Bentley officials have reportedly scrapped earlier plans to offer the car with the Bugatti Veyron’s W16 engine. It remains unclear what engine will lie beneath the hood of the Arnage T, but it very well could be a 650 horsepower version of the company’s W12.

It can go into Phantom territory, which is significantly more expensive, but to be honest I would much rather have one of those most recent Arnage Final Series or something of the sort over a Phantom, unless I was being driven around of course.

To make the new Bentley climb higher it will have the engine upgraded to “6 and 7/8ths L” from the traditional “6 and 3/4″ and the horsepower will go from “Adequate” to “Superlative”

The only thing more upscale than a Bentley is a Gulfstream, and even that’s pushing it.

It only makes sense.. the significantly less expensive Continentals already outpower the Arnage in nearly every way.. so a modernized, more powerful Phantom-fighting Arnage would command a premium over the current model, and leave room for the next Contininentals to move up in price and appointments to compete with the upcoming 200EX Rolls.

So, will the Chandelier be in the hallway between the lavatory and the lounge?

Or will it be situated in the Foyer over the starcase to the master bedroom?

How does the tip of the scale move up?

Rolls is not considered, because the Arnage is actually a car, whereas the Phantom comfortably attaches to the front of a train without suspicion.

Moving up the Arnage makes tons of sense, moving up the Continentals does not. Bentley can make handsome money picking up market share in the class where the Conti’s are sitting right now and probably wants to stay in touch with the Quatroportte/Panamera segment. Conti Speed versions can cover folks looking upmarket anyway…
