The current-generation GTI produces 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, but if reports are to be believed, the next-gen GTI may arrive with a welcome power boost.
Where precisely that power boost will come from is not quite clear, as some suggest it may come from an Audi-sourced update to the EA888 2.0-liter TSI engine, namely a new valve lift system, according to Autocar.
The Mark VI GTI (current generation) uses what Volkswagen internally refers to as the EA888 motor, a 2.0-liter unit that was utilized for its lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption. VW also revealed a Europe-only model known as the GTI Edition 35 recently, which some speculation that the model would come stateside being shot down, but now it seems that the heart of the Edition 35 may form the basis for the next-gen U.S. GTI instead.
Should VW make the switch, the 35 horsepower gain would be a welcome addition to the GTI as the segment continues to gain more powerful engines – even in non-performance models.
