With the launch of the next-generation Mazda6 right around the corner, it has been revealed that the performance Mazdaspeed6 version probably won’t see production. The current Mazdaspeed6 offers a good all-around performance package, but hasn’t seen the sales volume Mazda expected.
Another challenge for a Mazdaspeed version of the 6 is that the U.S. will actually be getting a larger version of the car than the rest of the world, which would translated into a more costly development process. The combination of these two factors makes it almost certain that there won’t be any future Mazdaspeed6s.
Mazda already announced that it would suspend Mazdaspeed6 production for 2008.
However, the new Mazda6 promises to be more refined than the outgoing model — and could even see the 3.7L V6 from the CX-9 — so the lack of a Mazdaspeed version might be easier to overlook.

Hmm that’s sad to hear. I really liked the Mazdaspeed 6. Nice car, pretty quick too. Well I guess if Mazda can achieve performance figures with it’s new generation Mazda 6 that is pretty similiar to that of the Mazdaspeed 6 then I guess they won’t have a need for it.

…that’s a real shame that Mazda figures they have to ’supersize’ a car just for North America.

Yeah it’s really weird that since the Mazdaspeed Miata and Mazdaspeed Protege, the run-life of any Mazdaspeed model doesn’t seem to extend more than around 5 years. As of 08 once they cut production of this the only Mazdaspeed they’ll have is the 3 which is also a nice vehicle. But isn’t a Mazdapeed MX-5 coming out for 09?

well… it is a great car, but it’s prone to heat sync. they mounted the intercooler in the WRX fashion… and without a scoop there, there really isn’t enough airflow for the intercooler to really do its job… they provably should have mounted the intercooler by the radiator/oil cooler if they really wanted to avoid a scoop.
I was seriously considering one until I did a little research. Plus, the rear bumper is a little ricer-ish.

Johnny, I think the current 6 is plenty big enough, but probably because Mazda wants to go head to head with the Accord and Camry in North America, they are supersizing the new one to bring it over 100 cubic feet (aka full-size) interior volume.
It would be great if they drop the 3.7L in there - good hp and torque, or in the absence of that bring us the global mazdaspeed6 as a special edition. Buyers of a mazdaspeed6 are probably not looking for a tankardly sports-boat anyway.

Mazda probably hears the same complaints from the auto journalists that we all do which is “its too small, its too small!”. It is hard not to follow the competition when it comes to specs and as the Camry, Accord (which is technically now a fullsize car by definition) move up in size you want your offering to be competitive. I don’t think Mazda will have any issue increasing sales when the 2009 6 bows based on what I’ve seen here. I just wish they would stick to a turbo charged 4 cylinder. The 3 is a better platform to compete for the sport and tuner segment anyway. Nissan isn’t offer a SE-R version of its Altima with the refresh and most other manufacturers don’t offer a high end sport trim until a couple of years into production. So there is hope!

I would contend that Mazda should expand their development and distribution of AWD across there entire line, at least, as an option. This would make MazdaSpeed variations easier to field.
If Mazda wants to upsize their 6, I am disappointed. If they really feel they must go up in size, then maybe developing a new “Mazda 9″ would not be out of place.

if the Mazdaspeed6 had been based on the 5-door then I think it would have sold a slight bit better. The rear seats don’t even fold down in the sedan version!! That’s the ONLY reason I went with the 5-door 6s rather than the ‘Speed version.
Doesn’t really matter that they aren’t making it for the 2009 version though as it’s going to sell very well for them, but still not be the volume leader like the Camcords. I’m actually happy about that. I think Mazda wants to simply increase their sales but not so much that they water down their content.

This news (discontinued Mazdaspeed6) is a little disappointing.
I do hope Mazda continues with their successful run of products. I am a little concerned over a plus-sized Mazda6 for our market, but I think it will be fine as long as Mazda still applies its core U.S. brand elements/features to the vehicle’s design/development. The CX-9 was conceived especially for the U.S. and it turned out to be an excellent addition to its portfolio of products.

What??? That was Mazda’s best model next to the Mazdaspeed3!
Whoever made this decision needs to be canned before s/he brings Mazda down with the rest of Ford.

I agree with 6ix.. marketing the next Mazdaspeed6 only in the hot new 5-door body would probably increase sales.. but unless Mazda can come up with a motor that is more powerful than the one the old MS6 shared with the MS3 and CX-7, there really isn’t much of a point. Perhaps the 3.7 is a better option for a sporty Mazda6, but it doesn’t seem appropriate for a Mazdaspeed.

As a Mazdaspeed 6 owner and a BMW owner as well I am pissed and sad at the same time. I am a Mazda salesman and love my MS6… They could have sold better if they would have marketed it like they did the MS3. I personally love the MS3 but the MS6 is so much better and so much more raw. The MS3 has Mazdaspeed stitched into the seats and has gauges with Mazdaspeed written on them and it’s marketed as a pocket rocket. the MS6 is pretty much a 6 GT with the Mazdaspeed components. Unfair I say. Give the MS6 the same opportunities that you gave the MS3 and Mazda would have a BMW fighter on its hands easily.

uhmmm… The MS6 does have a scoop. Open the hood and check out where the intercooler sits and see the 2 huge holes that flow into it from the front grill? That is the scoop for the intercooler. It provides enough airflow it’s just the turbo isn’t anything special bc there isn’t enough even flow through the engine. The turbo should be sequential or computerized to make it more efficient.

“its too small, its too small!”. is what Ricardoheads regular prostitute says to him
THe Mazda 6 looks great Inside and out If they would take that Ford duratec **** out of it and put a real Mazda derived engine in it then it would be a SERIOUS competitor to the Accord and the #1 selling car, the Camry
Also look out for the 09 Hyundai Sonata
The 6 and the Sonata are wild cards in the game of best family sedan. The Malibu has to deal with the Fusion and the Sebring

1115, considering it is one of the Mazda Z configurations that is being killed, not the Duratec V6 trim, it’s probably not doing so bad. I see V6 Mazda6s all the time, and they are highly rated.

Too bad. I was really looking forward to seeing another iteration of the Speed. I don’t think that having the new 6 come with the capability of the old speed6 will make it easier to bear. BMW’s current 335i puts up old M3 numbers, but they still have a new M3…

I don’t really buy the argument that is based of the fact that the US is getting a different car. The international MPS6 was a relatively different set up from the US-spec MS6
