The Mazda RX-8 was one of the first models to rejuvenate the rear-wheel drive sports coupe segments in 2003, but recent entrants like the Chevrolet Camaro and Hyundai Genesis Coupe have really cranked up the heat in the segment. As such, Mazda is readying a new version of the RX-8, but the next-gen car will be more evolutionary than revolutionary.
Despite creeping up on its seventh birthday, the Mazda RX-8 still provides a sublime combination of performance, practicality and style. Because of this fact, Mazda won’t be trying to reinvent the wheel with the next-generation RX-8, rather relying on the success of the current car.
Speaking to Autocar at the Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda design head Ikuo Maeda revealed that the next-generation of the RX-8 will be an evolutionary design of the current car. The next RX-8 will feature some of Mazda’s modern design cues and technology, but don’t look for the car to deviate from the pack as much as the original RX-8 did in 2003.
The next RX-8 – believed to be slated for a 2011 launch – will retain its rotary power, but expect to see some significant improvements. Thanks to Mazda’s new Sky engine technology, the next-generation will feature more power while reducing fuel consumption and overall emissions.
The RX-8’s unique rear-door treatment will likely make it on to the next iteration of car.
