Subaru unveiled an all-new version of its Impreza compact earlier this year at the New York Auto Show, but remained noticeably quiet about the car’s two performance derivatives – the WRX and STI. Although Subaru still isn’t giving up the goods, a new report has shed some more light on the situation.
While the 2012 Subaru Impreza is expected to hit dealer lots by year’s end, a new report from Car and Driver suggests enthusiasts may have to wait for up to two years before new versions of the performance variants arrive. Subaru will continue to offer the current versions of the WRX and the STI until the new cars arrive, which should go a long way in helping to keep the peace.
The exact reason for Subaru’s delay on the new cars remains unknown, but some rumors suggest that company executives are still deciding on the cars’ direction. Some WRX enthusiasts have matured since the car’s U.S. Introduction in 2001, but Subaru doesn’t want to alienate those buyers that still expect a rally-bred racer. Same goes for the higher-performing STI model.
Hopefully the extra time will allow Subaru to make the right choice, but we’ll just have to wait until 2013 to know for sure.
