Guessing that you've never had a prius. Mine is not even broke in, and in 2,000 miles of city and highway, I am averaging 49.5 MPG. Have got 55 MPG on the road. don't like my prius! Love it!!!!! Save the oil, trees, and Money. Can not see any car better in saving money in the world, mile for mile, and dollar for dollar

Hybrids are not a fad. Hybrids are the future. If you cannot see that, then you are definitely shortsighted.
Guess what fuel cell vehicles are? HYBRIDS, and when an infrastructure for hydrogen and whatever other alternative fuel arrives, hybrids will still be around.
Diesel hybrids are also in the furture, but guess what? Diesel is a non renewable resource just as is gas.

Hybrids are a fad that I can go down to the dealer and buy today. I agree that alt. fuels will open new doors in the future but at the moment there is nothing readily availible.

Even GM has realized that there may be something to the hybrids after all. So even they may not be so confident in that next level (Alt. sources). I'd place my bets on a low sulfer diesel being more successful in the coming years...

The Freedom Car, remeber that? A family sedan that would get 80mpg that the automakers were working on with the gov't and each other. Well it was based on a diesel hybrid car using lightweight composites to keep the weight of the car down. It was axed because of diesel emissions. Now with the advancement in diesel emissions technology (urea injection), a diesel hybrid getting 80mpg would be possible. 94mpg? Maybe with a plug in hybrid diesel.

"European diesels can do better, so why should somebody buy a hybrid ?
You should enjoy the ride (benzin or turbo diesel) not to try to save rain forrest…"

Because people like myself don't live in Europe... Diesel engines have a tough time gaining a foothold here in the states due to emissions. So at the moment, a hybrid is the way to go for fuel savings, even if the savings aren't as impressive as they claim.

I like what they are saying, but a Prius will not work for me at all. Why cant they build me something I can actually USE? I need a large truck/SUV for work & large family. I give props to Toyota to spending time and money on the hybrid "craze", but they need to make something HUGE (compared to a Prius) that gets reasonable mileage for a large vehicle. C'mon already, build it!

Saving fuel is a fad, the future is large trucks and even larger trucks. You non-believers will swallow your words when GM is king once again thanks to our gas guzzling trucks.

sorry for the slip on generations... I stand corrected.

Keep in mind, I do not have a problem with the car itself, the numbers ARE impressive at first glance. My comments are directed more towards the attitudes of the *majority* of those who own one....

The current Prius is actually gen 2. And damn, when I first heard the 90mpg rumors I figured it was BS and I'd never hear that rumor again, but it keeps coming back. Someone out there must be pretty confident it's gonna happen.

I wonder how they are going to evolve the styling of teh car to differentiate it from the gen 1.

That way the purchasers can feel forally superior to not only us regular drivers, but also superior to the Gen 1 buyers.
