NHTSA closes book on Tacoma cases

09/03/2008, 5:23 PM

By Drew Johnson

Although Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have racked up 431 complaints of unintended acceleration in 2004 to 2008 model year Tacoma pickup trucks, the Federal investigation involving the incidents has officially been closed, with no cause found.

The NHTSA says its investigation failed to come up with a defect in any Tacoma pickup that would have resulted in unintended acceleration.

“For those vehicles where the throttle control system did not perform as the owner believes it should have, the information suggesting a possible defect related to motor vehicle safety is quite limited,” the NHTSA said in a statement. “Additional investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists.”

51 of the 413 reports involved a crash, with 12 of those involving injuries. Although the NHTSA never found a physical defect in any of the trucks, the agency chalks up most of the crashes to driver error or incorrectly placed floor mats.

it was a puny 3 conspiracy. GM, ford, and chrysler would benefit greatly.

haha, true, it probably was stupid drivers that caused the “unintentional acceleration”

I’ve had it happen in a Windstar when downshifting from overdrive into drive. It was not a floormat malfunction. I’m pretty sure if you asked the 431 Tacoma owners who filed a complaint there’d be a certain part of Toyota’s anatomy they’d like dragged across the carpet.

i just realized, why weren’t these people paying attention to the speedometer? shouldn’t braking inhibit the unintentional acceleration?

Wasn’t the last unintentional acceleration due to a slipping floor mat that jammed against an accelerator? Wonder if they thought to check that again…

Hopefully all the Toy-bashers have been practicing their apologies (alibis?) in the mirror.
If ou believed this one, you’ll believe anything they’ll say in Minneapolis this week!

So the “almighty” Toy Ota walks away from this self-inflicted mess unharmed. If it were one of the Domestics everyone and their grandmother would be screaming bloody murder. So who did they have to pay off this time?!?

I wonder if the “unintended acceleration” had anything to do with cruise control being on and set?

Or was that just an excuse for running a red light?

I own an 07 Tacoma and have never experienced it. In fact, it’s been the perfect truck. It’s not been back to the dealer since the original purchase.

Wow, a year old truck with no problems, that’s really impressive.

Get back to us when your truck has several hundred thousand miles on it with no problems like owners of GM trucks. Toyotas don’t last 1/10 as long as GM vehicles do so enjoy the short honeymoon.

It sickens me that Toyota got away with this when so many companies lost their shirt over the ‘roll-over’ issue. If there was ever a time to scream ‘driver error’ it was then. It’s not an Elise, it’s an Explorer. Drive it as such.
