Under scrutiny are 100,000 Versas from the 2012 model year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that the airbag cable located in the steering column can get pinched, causing damage and potentially preventing the airbag from deploying. In the event the cable is pinched, a warning light on the dashboard will illuminate.
The investigation, which was opened after the NHTSA was notified of the problem by Nissan, is currently in the preliminary stage, but it could eventually lead to a recall. The NHTSA typically takes about six months to decide whether to upgrade an investigation into a full-blown engineering analysis, which must be performed before the government can require an automaker to conduct a recall.
