NHTSA investigates Ford minivans over possible transmission defect

11/17/2009, 6:22 PM

By Drew Johnson

Following the recall of 1.1 million minivans last month for a faulty cruise control switch, Ford may be forced to recall another 205,000 vans due to a potentially faulty transmission. The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration has opened an investigation involving 2004-05 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans.

The NHTSA is looking into complaints about a possible transmission defect in 2004 and 2005 model year Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. The investigation could involve up to 205,000 vehicles.

The NHTSA has received 654 complaints and tallied 2,791 warranty claims related to a sudden transmission failure. Vehicles that experience the failure are unable to move. Several of the complaints have involved vehicles moving at highways speeds.

Although no official recall has been announced, one could be announced in the coming months. Ford produced the Freestar and Monterey from 2003 until 2007.

Probably can be fixed with zip ties.

That’s what caused the problem. The zip ties eventually melt under the heat of the transmission and clog up the valve body when they solidify.

Now…if only we could get Ford to admit that the spark plugs on a V8 are NOT supposed to shoot out of the head…

EMINEM, yeah… I’m surprised too. Nothing to do with the oil boy(s)… I could care less… but I think most of us are far too wrapped up in this Toyota ordeal to really give a hoot about some lame potential recall on a Ford minivan that no one really gave a damn about when it was being built. And speaking of Ford recalls… well maybe recall isn’t exactly the best term… but one only has to go back to the Explorer/Firestone debacle to put the potential damage to Toyota into perspective. That the Explorer went from one of the best selling vehicles to an also ran almost overnight set the precedent for damage control in the auto industry. That was one vehicle… with Toyota we’re talking an entire company’s efforts in North America. That is some serious sh*t.

A few crappy transmissions on a Freestar? Whatever. You can probably pick up a used Freestar for less than the price of a new transmission.

Well considering this mini-van was designed before Ford went serious about quality and safety, and that it was actually a facelift from the Windstar designed back in 1997-1998, I blame the old typical Ford not the new quality Ford.

uh…not that i really want to have a conversation with you, lunatic, since you do in fact seem to be a lunatic…but 2800 dropped transmissions is not quite the same as killing 20 people…just saying…also, ford is not going to replace the rear view mirror when the transmission is the problem, where toyota is fixing floor mats and gas pedals when that is *not* the problem…

big difference…

you obviously can’t see that, but at least i tried…

Lunatic; are you capable of reading? did you even read the article? or did you just skip straight the the excuse making and leg humping?

the 1.1M vehicle recall was for a faulty cruise control switch. the transmission issue is only 205,000. even combined, that’s less than 1/2 the volume being recalled by Toyota. Combine that with the fact that Toyota’s problems are killing people and they’re playing cover up, and this hardly seems comparable.

as far as this recall goes… how is this news? everyone has recalls

I drove a diesel Ford F-350 box truck for work that went through 2 transmissions in less than 30k. Even after the 2nd tranny was installed, the truck had problems with skipping gears. It was the only Ford we owned, the rest were GMC vans and a Chevy dump truck. We took it back to the dealer and told them to keep it.

03t4r- you probably should of found a new dealer…I have many Ford trucks and a few GM trucks and the few GM’s I have have had many more repairs than the Ford’s. One of my drivers blows up vehicles because of his driving habits, but he is worth it so …..anyway, sometimes its the nut behind the wheel not the vehicle. Try buying your kid a car they don’t want. it will end up breaking and dented and dirty. Maybe you like GM vehicles better and thats the real deal?? Could be??? This Freestar inquiry could be all about the people who bought this ugly van really hated it from the start and the tranny is the weakest link in the line of an aggessive/unhappy driver. Whenever I rent a crappy rental car, I thrash it…I try to teach it a lesson for being such a crappy car….I’m not alone on this one. Most all Freestar’s sold 2004 and up were rental units…my point.

I think the truck we owned was overweight for the tranny. It drove terribly, very bad in corners because the cab hung over the frame quite a bit. The Ford was so damn heavy that we often had to punch it to get it up hills. The Chevy and the GMC had their problems, but nothing major, usually sensors and junk. It wasn’t the driver either because the guys took whatever truck was available and the Ford was only reserved for the biggest loads or as a reserve truck if the shop manager had to go in the field. I had one guy that really beat on the vans, but he was the elder and got the newest van. He never drove the Ford.

I have spent a lifetime diagnosing and curing Ford products, so a simple transmission FIELD SERVICE ACTION and a couple hundred thousand mini vans is really no big deal. We built them, We can fix them. Ther really is no way to comapre a campaign like this to what Toyota is going through, make no mistake, ther isn’t a single soul in the industry that is finding joy in the situation involving electronic throttle bodies. Remember, just abpout every vehicle being today has one and they can all go bad. Is Fords quality getting better…,YES, but unless our president improves the financial situation in this country it won’t really matter. DRIVE AMERICAN

I encourage anybody to visit a used car lot and see, drive any old Ford to see how it drives, handles like ****, they catch fire easily, retail value seems like it goes by the hour and dont even mention quality, they have lied to the american public for decades claiming “Quality is Job 1″ this minivan recall is just the tip of the iceberg not to mention the July 08′ 9 million car, truck recall for the crusie control fires “OLD Ford” is no excuse from a car company that started in 1908 that should have been cutting edge in the industry by now. eventually they will end up recalling all there vehicles back for some problem or another, then maybe u will see why we keep saying Ford sucks!!

Ford is miles ahead of GM and Chrysler. People now buy their cars and they’re starting to gain a good reputation. Their overall reliability has also improved enough to compete with imports.
