The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Monday that it has opened an investigation into a potential steering issue with the 2010 Kia Soul .

Although it usually takes a few complaints to get the NHTSA’s attention, the severity of one Kia Soul owner’s report was serious enough to warrant an immediate investigation. The NHTSA opened its probe of the Kia Soul after one owner reported that the car’s steering shaft completely separate, resulting in a loss of control. The report also alleged that the steering shaft interfered with the driver’s ability to hit the brakes.

Kia has yet to comment on the investigation, but the NHTSA says it is “very concerned” over the complaint as the Soul in question was only two months old with very low mileage.

If the NHTSA’s investigation results in a recall, more than 50,000 vehicles could be involved.
