The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that it has launched an investigation involving Toyota ’s Tacoma pickup truck. The investigation stems from several complaints that the Tacoma suffers from unintentional acceleration.
According to the Detroit Free Press, in all, the NHTSA has received 33 complaints about the pickup, 8 of which resulted in accidents. However, despite the complaints, a mechanical reason for the unintentional accelerations has yet to be found.
Toyota is no stranger to such allegations as the Japanese automaker has been accused with producing vehicles that exhibit unintentional acceleration four times in the last year. One such investigation, involving the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES 350, even prompted a recall. That recall was due to floor mats that could jam under the accelerator, causing the pedal to get wedged.
The Tacoma has been under recent fire during the last few months as a rusting problem has forced Toyota to buy back some of the afflicted trucks. The rusting issue effected Tacomas produced between 1995 and 2000 whereas the new problem is said to only impact 2006 and 2007 models.
