NHTSA looking into Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky brake complaints

03/10/2008, 4:21 PM

By Drew Johnson

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that it is launching a preliminary investigation into complaints it has received involving the turbocharged models of the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. The complaints claim that the cars’ brakes don’t work as well as they should.

According to Automotive News, the NHTSA has received 40 complaints that the cars require too much brake pedal pressure in order to stop the car, particularly when the engine is cold.

Last December, General Motors issued a technical service bulletin that advised dealerships to recalibrate the roadsters’ brake control modules.

Although the investigation is its preliminary stages, it could eventually result in a recall.

What would engine temperature have to do with braking? I could see if Pontiac was using an aggresive pad it might need to be up to temp first, but I highly doubt they’re using Corvette caliber brakes on a car in this price range.

When test drove the Pontiac Solstice turbo, brakes were fine, the clutch needs to be investigated. The salesman could not pull out of the parking spot, called manager who did not fare much better. I managed, but had to rev high and clutch slipped. I can see when someone might jumped from 0 to 30 without trying hard and not being able to stop in front of the wall or tree.

Solstice is a front engine version of the Pontiac Fiero. Plastic piece of trash. Short lived like the Astek.

Is that so, 400horseSS? My dad’s diesel powered 2500HP stops faster than my brother’s E36 for cryin out loud. I don’t usually call those crappy brakes. My 2000 Sierra stops even better.

About that car. Last time I checked having a turbocharger doesn’t help when you have a vacuum assisted brake system. Dumbasses.

I guess brake problems only exist in the cars. I remember the first Z06 having problems with the master cylinder.

You need to get your facts straight 400, quite making up bull ****! GM builds the best braking systems in the world, that is a widely known fact even the media will back up. Sounds like you need a trip to the gym?

This is just another Communist Reports ambulance chasing mission to make a stellar product like the Kappa cars look bad. What a joke.

Yet another ‘investigation’ story. How about we worry about this if they find a problem. IMHO, that is a mighty big if in this case…

Most dumbasses don’t even know how to bleed their brakes nowadays so they complained on JD power about not enough stopping power. boo hoo

This car and its inbred Saturn sister are the ugliest sports cars I have ever seen. I can’t believe someone drew a sketch of this and thought it was good looking enough to build! The rear of this car looks like a baboons ass.

Um VW? Where in the world did you get the idea that VW is some sort of quality machine? If you believe JD Power, they are at the bottom with Hyundai/Kia. Not saying they can’t improve, but come on!

Can’t get any worse than a Volkswagon for quality/reliability/dependibility. Even Chryslers and Fords are better than V-dubs and that’s sayin somethin!
