Infiniti’s “muscle car with brains” – aka the 2003-2004 M45 sedan – has come under the scrutiny of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a potential defect in the vehicle’s fuel system.

The NHTSA has launched a probe into the two-generations old M after receiving 43 complaints of inaccurate fuel level readings. Although not an immediate threat to passenger safety, 26 of those complaints did involved engine stalling as the result of erroneous fuel level readings.

“All 26 incidents reported stalling because the fuel level reading indicated fuel in the tank when there was none,” the agency said. “The complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with most received within the past year.”

About 8,100 vehicles are involved in the investigation, but it remains to be seen if the probe will ultimately result in a recall. Infiniti says it’s “aware of the NHTSA investigation and will work to address any issues that arise from it.”
