By now most people have long forgotten about the
Kia Borrego - the Korean automaker's full-size SUV that launched just as gas hit $4 and the economy collapsed - but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is giving us a quick reminder of the
ill-fated utility vehicle with a new recall.
The NHTSA has announced the recall of 21,912 Borrego models from the 2009 model year over a possible brake defect. Only Borrego models not equipped with adjustable pedals are included in the recall.
The NHTSA says that the Borrego's pedal mounts may have been made with an inferior fiberglass compound that can break in the event of a crash. If the crash doesn't immobilize the vehicle, it may be impossible for the driver to apply the brakes, increasing the likelihood of a second impact.
Kia says it will remedy the problem by replacing the defective pedal mounts free of charge. The Borrego recall campaign is expected to begin later this month.
