Floor mats or floor pan design that contribute to holding the accelerator pedal down, really have nothing to do with the DBW aspect of the system. But the specter of a mad computer crash controlling your vehicle is a lot more scary to write about, and can do far more damage to the manufacturer. There’s nothing in the NHTSA statement that even mentions DBW, nor even suggests than there might be some other issue contributing to the problem, besides the floormats and the underlying floor pan design. It’s nothing but slander against Toyota, when there is no proof that DBW is involved. Consider the following ‘crisis whore’ statement, “Perhaps even more concerning, reports of out-of-control Toyotas spiked after 2002 – the same year the Japanese automaker switched to a computer controlled drive by wire system”. That brings to mind an old statement, “liars figure, and figures lie”. Toyota probably changed a lot of things in 2002, including using a different kind of accelerator pedal with a new DBW system. Floor mats or floor pan design that contribute to holding the accelerator pedal down, really have nothing to do with the DBW aspect of the system. But the specter of a mad computer crash controlling your vehicle is a lot more scary to write about, and can do far more damage to the manufacturer.

I think it is an interferance issue with the fly by wire system I had a Honda that when I sat my cell phone near the passenger seat, the airbag light would come on. The dealer told me to put it on the center console and not on the seat or near the seat. It didn't even have to be ON the seat . I later received a recall letter for a new seat sensor. RF was the problem. A freind of mine had a Ford Powerstroke pickup with a 2 way radio that had a wire installed too close to the accelerator petal assy. It would accelerate and die whenever the radio was being used in a two way conversation...pretty weird stuff indeed. These modern vehicles have lots of "wireless comunications" that are being affected by our cell phones, two way radios, and ipods. Thats why they want you to turn off your phone while your flying in a commercial aircraft. "Cellphones interfere with planes electronics" is what you hear on every flight.
