Nissan – Japan’s third largest automaker – has announced the launch of a new navigation system with an added focus on safe, and green, driving. Nissan’s new navigation system will be the first production system to use intelligent transportation system (ITS) infrastructure and other advanced technologies.
Intended to keep the driver aware of potentially dangerous driving conditions, the new system will warn drivers of low-visibility intersections, school zones and will even include navigation-linked speed controls. Additionally, the system will be able to route based on the most fuel efficient path.
The ability to warn drivers of low-visibility situation will be the system’s hallmark, working in tandem with ITS. When a driver approaches a low-visibility situation – such as a blind corner of potentially hidden traffic signal – the system will flash a warning to the driver. Nissan is hopeful the advanced warning system will cut down on the number of traffic accidents and roadside fatalities.
The new system will bow in the JDM Nissan Fuga by year’s end and will hit the U.S. market in the Infiniti M next year.
