I don't get the point.

Blakkar: "The G35 sedan is quite good as is." Yep.

I owned a crap celica, before they got girlie.

DrFill: "The 93 Supra and SC400 are better than any two-doors Nissan has ever built."
Uh, no.

Supra was acceptable, but its contemporary Z remains the best japanese car ever.

The Motor Trend report is littered with inaccuracies and inconsistencies, including:
1. The GT-R's platform, according to Nissan, is ALREADY Premium Midship; they had to extensively modify FM (the G/Skyline) to get, among other things, a rear-mounted transaxle
2. If Nissan comes up with a wheelbase stretch, all new sheetmetal, and a second set of rear doors, and only charges $3,000 to $5,000 more than a GT-R, then both Finance and Marketing need to be fired
3. If such vehicle existed, it would not compete with AMG and M; Infiniti would need a performance sub-brand to do that. What it would give Infiniti is something to compete with the BMW 8 Series and Mercedes CLS.

This is a bad idea! and I work for a nissan dealership! our GM told me that they already sold 3 GT-R's and they are coming in a couple of months. I hope the recent recall that Nissan did for the 09 Murano and 08 EX35 doesn't affect this car. And now they are going to give an image car to Infiniti cause their dealerships are crying out to them? One it is already hard to sell a $70,000+ Nissan to people that own Porsche, BMW, Mercedes and Audi but! for those people that have followed this vehicle and yearn for it they will purchase it. Nissan don't do this to this vehicle. Infiniti is still making a name for itself and they already have an image car the G37 coupe (ala Skyline coupe in Japan) and the M35/45 sedans.

Z06
Not to let the facts get in the way of your good story, but MT tested the ZR-1 head to head against the Supra twice, Feb '95, and July/Aug 93.
ZR-1 spit the bit.
Twice!
There are more than a few 6-second 528i out there.
Some vehicles are overachievers. And some.....spit the bit.
Get over it.

Fill - nice magazine racing you do - you just go through old magazine article, pick out the ones that support your opinion, ignore all the rest that say otherwise, and you're done.

The ZR-1 would hand a Supra Turbo its ass on a silver platter at any track, anywhere, any day of the week. Instead of reading magazines all day like you do, I've seen these cars first hand go at it bone stock, drag racing and autocross, and the ZR-1 is the faster and better handling car.

I don't know what was wrong with that particular ZR-1 that MT tested in that ONE article that you declare as the gospil, but it was the slowest accelerating ZR-1 ever tested short of Consumer Reports.

Do the math: the Supra Turbo had 300hp and over 3,500 lbs. The Corvette ZR-1 had 405hp and 3,400 lbs. Even if the Supra's motor was "under rated" as I know you're going to say next, it was not putting out 405hp either in stock form.

The Supra Turbo was a good match for the LT-4 powered C4 Corvette. The ZR-1 was in another league above the Supra (as it should be, it cost more too).

I like the Supra for certain things, but I can't stand it when people over-hype the car, and remember it as something it as some legend that it wasn't, in many cases before some of you were even born. The car really didn't get its fame until the movie the "Fast and the Furious" came out. Tuners didn't realize its full potential until years after it was no longer imported in the U.S.

I don't ever ask C&D or MotorTrent for their opinions :).

The C5 exceeded Supra's performance in every way. LS1 F-bodies were an even match for Supra. The LT1 powered C4's were an even match for the Supra as well. An 87 Buick could take a 98 Supra in a straight line. This isn't a knock against the car but Supra wasn't anything special though certainly competitive. R34 GT-Rs were better overall cars, though Supra had the better engine.

Hell even a 91 GMC Pickup Truck could take a Supra (and a Ferrari in 1991).

But this isn't' about the Supra, its about the modern GT-R and why Nissan should/shouldn't make a 4-door Infiniti using the GT-R's drivetrain. They already share a common RWD platform between the GTR and 4dr G, so why not a G38?

Z06
Not so fast. The Z was the better handler and braker, the Supra was faster in a straight line. It didn't run out of competition - the Corvette routinely matched it in performance

Than don't ask C&D or Motor Trend for their opinions, because you might get your feelings hurt.
The 95 ZR-1 was defeated by Supra in MT.
The C5 (1998) was able to match, not exceed, it's perfomance, according to C&D.
Let's forget old whipping boys like the C4 and 300Z.

"THe Supra beat the Z head to head on a daily basis. So much better, it ran out of competition. At 3500 lbs.

Not so fast. The Z was the better handler and braker, the Supra was faster in a straight line. It didn't run out of competition - the Corvette routinely matched it in performance and kicked its butt in sales, mostly due to the Supra's questionable styling and hefty price tag. The Supra ran out of a market and ran out of emissions compliance (last years were automatic-only for emissions compliance) - not competition. U.S. sales of the Supra turbo in its last 2 years were dismal at best.

Why do so many people think this is a dumb idea? A 4-door Infiniti GT-R would enable Infiniti to compete with high performance sedans such as the CTS-V, M5, E63, RS6, etc. Makes sense to me.

A few of you have figured out that this would be a competitor tho the upcoming Porsche Panamera, the CLS and other such high performance "sedans". This will not bastardize the GT-R if Infiniti does this right, and would make a nice halo car.

I think Nissan should build a 4 door GT-R but it should not look like the GT-R since it is hideous although I do like the rear and the interior is ugly.

Strapping 500HP and AWD to a face only a mother can love doesn't impress me.
THe Supra beat the Z head to head on a daily basis. So much better, it ran out of competition. At 3500 lbs.
And C&D only called the Lexus "Possibly the best car on the planet".
So you are saying it has taken Nissan 15 years to make a Japanese supercar? Thanks for making my point.
And it's STILL a double-bagger!

Jayjc08 - Incorrect. They offered four door variants for ALL versions of the Skyline since the R31 way back when in the 80's. The difference is that they were not GT-Rs, as in not AWD, twin turbo. Just RWD and single turbo or NA.

I think that if they sold an Infiniti-badged GT-R that it should not be anywhere near the performance of the GT-R. Simply because the new GT-R is a car wrapped in decades of heritage, something that the Infiniti brand is not involved in. And offering an Infiniti badged car would just subtract from the legendary status that a car such as this commands. Just my two cents...

That will be a misfit for Infiniti. If you want a luxury sport car, try having Nismo tune some of the existing Sedan. Putting an Infiniti badge on the GT-R won't work. This is rebadging at its worse, because while it doesn't benefit Infiniti's brand image, it will likely destroy an otherwise legendary car.

Oh I am sure those Nissan dealers with huge markup would be thrill to know that their halo car has been stolen!

did anyone read the f-ing article the only similarities between the infinti sedan version and the GTR is the platform, power train and suspension. it would have a new interior and sheet metal. they won't look the same if it follows the same name designation and the current infiniti's it would be the G38 or G38x something like that

dr fill - the sc300 and the supra are better then any Nissan coupe ever? the new GT-R would eat them alive and at sticker price at the time they were new in todays dollars the new GT-R is a better deal period. the R34 v spec II is a better car when it was new then. the Lexus had no turbo option i can recall and the supra was in bad need of a diet at the time even the 300Z turbo was better and it needed a diet also.

cwww wilson, ss4life- They never offered a 4 door Skyline, it was a one off custom. Three in total were made, from an R33 and 34's (the R32 and 33 was available with 4 doors, however Blitz went through with a custom R33 also I believe). The strange thing is, the R34 modification makes it look more like the R33, especially the tail lights. Google it, actual photos show the difference better however.

Aside from 4 doors and different models, what really confuses me is the difference between the R34 and V35. Hearing so many press releases on the R34 still coming out, and the same with the V35 as Infiniti in America, makes my head go in circles. Probably as they both look totally different, and the platforms are so different...

But you know, really when I think about it, a 4 door of the new Nissan Skyline would be idiocracy. Of course, I'm basing that statement on the current design, but I don't believe this platform was made with a 4 door in mind. Maybe with the drive train but...

cwwilson is right. They did offer a four door Skyline. I think it was an R33 or was it an R32? It was one or both of them.

I can understand why Nissan is considering this. If they want their premium luxury brand Infiniti to go up against the M5, CLK AMG, IS-F, CTS/STS-V it's something to try but that's some stiff competition. It's 480hp AWD may be good in a two door coupe but add two more doors and 200+ lbs and the only thing it may take on is the IS-F.

And Infiniti is stupid if they can think that their car would compete with a Porsche Panamera, or an Aston Martin Rapide.

As to whether this will help on hinder the GT-R name, if they call it the GT-R I think Inifiniti should calll it the Skyline, because it sounds more upscale however I'm probably going to catch some flack for even saying that. I don't know on this.

This makes total sense for Infiniti.. they haven't had much luck selling sedans in the Lexus LS/Mercedes S/BMW 7 size/price range over the Q's three generations, so why not let the M remain Infiniti's largest/most capacious sedan and remake the next Q as a smaller, much more powerful 4-door flagship.. based on stretched GT-R mechanicals? It couldn't sell any worse than the last Q!

Nimrod, the article is not about replacing the 2-door with a four-door. Sorry you missed the point.
Nissan doesn't know how to make anything profitable.
Maybe this will help.
The 93 Supra and SC400 are better than any two-doors Nissan has ever built.

Madcapp, Celica was nice looking car (perhaps a bit of a girlie car), MR2 was OK, Supra was terrific. The problem was they did not sell and died like dinosaurs.
I am not a fan of GT-R perhaps 4 door will be better looking.

I can see an infiniti version of the GT-R but they should give it a bit more power, a more luxurious interior, and still have 2 doors. Sticker it around 80K or so, and you have a nice halo car for the brand.

^^^Dumbass, the Toyota reference is based on the fact that Toyota does not know how to build anything but 4 door cars. Buy yourself a clue.

You guys have to remember, there were 4-door Skylines made (check out the Blitz drifter Skyline) but for this certain role as an Infiniti...I don't know if I like it. We'll just have to see what it looks like and what it can do.

Madcapp doesn't know what he's talking about
The GT-R is an incredible performer, but it is as ugly as the day is long, and a $75k 4-door is pointless.
Especially as a Nissan.
This thing is a double-bagger as a coupe.
More would not be better.
Thank You.

This is the DUMBEST idea I've heard in a long time, I must say.

A 4-door version would look retarded. (I've seen two GTRs in real life and this is just from my imagination of an elongated one) Kinda like how the G35 (sedan) looks compared to the G37. (coupe) While the G37 is one SEXY car the G35 I think is a huge step down.

Also, they better not call the sedan a GTR or that's really going to hurt the image of the GTR, imo.
