Nissan considering voiding warranty on second-owner GT-Rs

08/22/2007, 11:55 AM

By Drew Johnson

Nissan is considering voiding the warranty on its upcoming GT-R if the car exchanges hands during the first year it is on the road. There is already a long waiting list for the super-coupe, including many people who intend to sell the car as soon as they take delivery, making a premium over the sticker price. Nissan is considering the move in order to prevent, or at least limit, this from happening.

“That’s the route we’re looking at,” said Scott Vazin, Nissan’s director of product public relations. “A warranty decision will be made before the Tokyo auto show.” The GT-R is expected to be priced near $70,000 when it hits dealer showrooms.

Why would Nissan care… does it not generate buzz about the car and increase its desirability?

Since this car has had the longest development I have ever witnessed; I’ve got this feeling it is going to be perfect. I want to see it tangle with an Audi R8.

I hope after all it’s development that it kicks ass. All the previous GT-R’s did, and I want this to wipe the smile off of Ferrai and Porsche, especially around the Nurburgring

i hope nissan does this, i hate all those douchebags on ebay that jack up the sticker price just because they got one first.

Why would they care, damn near every supercar is sold at a mark up in the first place why dont they tackle that issue. No, instead they find a way to screw second owners by not backing the reliability of the car. Thats stupid,I cant afford one but as far as the anticipation factor, I’m over this car.

Its just business, why do they care? The car is still new when it passes hands

Market place should solve issue of car price. Manufacturer must back-up their product. This is just a way out of warranty. Assume someone bought it and find to be a lemon? He will sell it, then Nissan will screw next guy. Slimy tactic, but then again the company has French pedigree.

55amg: I want to hate the R8, too but when Car says it’s better that a 911 one has to listen and respect. I just want to see it on the road; it’s hard to tell if it’s good looking or just has massive presence.

If ford had done this on the gt500 there would be 100 posts screaming about ford and their policies and dealer markup. Instead posts about the quality of a car that ins’t even built yet. awesome

Why in hell does Nissan care? If the jackasses of the world are willing to pay more than the car costs, let them waste their money. The whole ‘I gotta have it’ attitude is annoying.

autonut, don’t make hasty generalizations about an entire people. if some guy bought one and it was a lemon, he would xxxxing return it because it’s warrantied, not sell it to some loser who’s dumb enough to buy it when nissan voids the warranty if sold before the end of the first year of ownership.

They’re trying to do it for customer satisfaction, Piablo (or atleast partly).

Anybody remember why the most recent generation Ford Thunderbird failed? Stickers went sky high, and then incentives were piled on. I know personally a few people who felt screwed by the brand, and unsatisfied that they paid top dollar for something they could have bought at 10,000 bucks less.

Same goes for Nissan. This is gonna be a car that will be very vulnerable to sky high stickers and people looking to make ridiculous amounts of money, and spend, on these cars. Part of the blame goes on the stupidity of the person to buy one, but I suppose you can’t go out and buy one for original sticker when the price is jacked up.

Why should speculators make all the money off a product they didn’t build? I bet Nissan is cutting a deal with their outlets: In exchange for letting a dealer sell the GT-R, Nissan Corporate gets a cut of any profit over MSRP, plus their usual invoice.

@ global_lightning, I highly doubt that Nissan has set up such a plan. If it were ever made public that they were condoning such rediculousness, it would NOT look good.
