Nissan and NHTSA have announced a safety recall that will affect 46,000 Cube compact vehicles, including both 2009 and 2010 model year vehicles.

The recall was sparked by the discovery of excessive fuel leakage in the event of a rear-end vehicle impact. NHTSA says that the excessive amount of leaking fuel poses a fire risk, and like the Lexus HS 250h which recently suffered the same fate, the Cube will be recalled to address the issue.

Nissan says the problem exists on Cubes produced between January 30, 2009, and July 30, 2010. Dealers will install a special protection device to the gasoline recirculation tube in order to prevent fuel leaking in the event of an accident.

The recall will officially begin on or before August 30, 2010.
