Nissan debunks U.S.-spec GT-R myths

05/02/2008, 4:29 PM

By paulee

The Nissan GT-R is one impressive piece of machinery, which is perhaps why there are so many myths out there regarding the supercar. One of them has to do with a speed limiter that the on-board brains can raise when the GPS system detects the car is on a racetrack.

Well, the crew at Car and Driver set out to dispel the rumors and set the record straight once and for all. For starters, they called up Nissan and asked about the speed limiter, to which Nissan replied that U.S.-spec cars will be redline limited only, with no electronics holding drivers back.

Other pieces of fiction involved costly post-track day checkups at Nissan dealerships necessary to keep the warranty intact, an aggressive camber set-up that will eat up tires in just 5,000 miles (Nissan did offer it got more than 10,000 miles from a set on a street-driven car) and $3,000 brake jobs.

Other tire-related issues were indeed true. Removing and re-mounting the car’s OEM-spec run-flat tires is not recommended as it will stretch built-in knurled beads that are meant to hold the tire firmly to the rim under hard acceleration. Also, as the car features an advanced all-wheel drive system, buyers may need to replace all four tires when one gets a puncture, for example, though this will be at the discretion of Nissan.

Sky-high maintenance cost estimates — to the tune of up to $15,000 per year — are likewise a fairy tale, as Nissan will provide what it calls Performance Optimization Services free of charge for the first 36 months.

The remaining two rumors center around the buying experience, as only dealer principals, executive managers, or general managers will be allowed to sell the GT-R, and the full-disclosure content is still being finalized. Nissan has been accused of “struggling” with the materials it will require every GT-R buyer to understand and sign to ensure it is covered legally in case its very capable product is misused.

Perfromance Optimization Service…POS…they screwed that up ’cause that’s just funny.

Hello Nissan dealer, just a heads up I am bringing my GT-R for a POS tunning tomorrow…LOL

I love it when people come on to automotive websites and easily claim they’ll be dropping a minimum of $70K on a car… Which is all fine and dandy of course because I’m picking up my new DB9 tomorrow, so to each their own.

Either way… we always seem to have the extreme sides of the coin here on LLN – either the blindly biased import-humpers or the equally biased domestic fanboys…

This car deserves the credit it’s due… it’s certainly not overpriced for what one gets and it’s definitely not overrated – over-hyped maybe, but not overrated…. and it’s ridiculous for anyone to make such an assertion… just as it’s ridiculous when the other side of that coin make equally ignorant remarks about the ZR1… 75% of the people on here are exactly the same – they just preach from different books.

i honestly would like to know whats overpriced and overrated about a car that costs less than every major supercar out there yet performs better, im not saying its the most sophisticated thing to look at nor does it demand the respect most people seem to want to withhold because of this hate wagon going around– but have an independent thought and take the car for what it is – an incredibly engineered offering from a factory production car company at a bargin basement price point. – its impressive to say the least and it will only ignite a fire for a new way to think about motoring. we should be proud that not only is there a company out there that provided this thing for public consumption, but also finally offered it to us in the states to get a taste. i may or may not end up buying one in the long run – id have to drive it first to see if it turns on all the right buttons – like the c6 corvette (for example) always does- but i could never fix my brain into believing that its over priced and overrated – thats just balderdash!

The GT-R today … is like the NSX was back in 1990. It made the ‘establishment’ of supercars (Ferrari, Porsche, etc) look over their shoulder. More people could get into a car that could get similar performance numbers on the track for a fraction of the price.

To the ‘brand conscious’ people on this board … I don’t care who makes the car. If it delivers what it promises … and at the price stated … this car is the real deal. The GT-R is not overpriced (find me a car from any country of origin that can produce those performance numbers at that price). One has already said … it can be argued the GT-R is overhyped … that I will say that it’s very possible … but numbers don’t lie.

Most readers here wish they could afford to drive any of these vehicles (GT-R, ZR1, Carrera GT, etc …) and each is entitled to root for whatever dream car they want … but at least be realistic and acknowledge that the GT-R (based upon every magazine article published so far) … it has some great numbers at a very reasonable price (relatively speaking).

I remember back in the 1990’s when the first Zr-1 came out. One of my all time favorite cars. It had around 400 HP (385 to be exact) weighed almost 4,000 pounds, and the cost of buying one when it debuted in 1989???? $66,000.

I’m not sure what all of you are in arms about. It’s a car that beats most Ferrari’s, for a third of the price, and actually has some road going ability as well.

And get over the comparisons between the Corvette and Nissan GT-R. Both are fast, but the Vette will never be a GT-R, and neither will the GT-R try to be a Vette.

Guys, honestly. I can’t get over how stupid this ****ing “debate” is. Most of the idiots on this forum will never own a Vette or the GTR. You’ll just soldier through life asking your wife if it’s OK to get the Accord or Camry – these track cars will be nothing more than a dream, fragments of a broken promise you made to yourself as a boy that you would one day grow up and own a sports car.

Does it matter which is faster anyways? What the **** are we expecting with 500 horsepower, a subcompact economy car? They will both be tremendous performers, in the same way 400SS’ mom is tremendous at sucking a dick.

Regardless of the maintenance cost The GT-R is a great performing car. And dare I say for the price it is an absolute bargin considering its ranked in an elite class of cars that are above $250,000 range like Ferrarri, Lambo, etc, etc.

Deanster Shut up. You don’t know. And secondly why do you care.
I right now don’t have the money for either and maybe ditto for all the LLN patrons, but that neither gives you the right to blast someone for dreaming or whatever and or who’s to say for sure I or they WON’T at some point in time have the money for one. And as for the dreamers hey its ok to dream it does’nt cost you a thing.

Good to see that the car is not speed limited by GPS! That would have been crap for a supercar.

Bad to see that you have to buy 4 tires for one damn puncture! In this case “at the discretion of Nissan” is read “always”!

Even worse is that the car still looks like an over-designed shoebox! :p

^ Well it’s probably all the overly advanced tech on the car. With the amount of computer-controlled input the car gets, if there’s some significant uneven tire wear that would probably throw the car off quite a bit, and could be dangerous during performance driving.

Every sales person is a “manager” at dealerships. At least they all call themselves “the manager”.

Full disclosure? That’s as idiotic as the stupid legal disclaimer that displays on Nav system. People will still crash these cars and attempt to sue Nissan anyway. Because they can.
